Achieving one of my musical goals

I made a vow that part of my advancement this year would be learning to play while standing.

I'm pleased to say I'm making great good progress on that goal. I play a 30 minute set nearly every Thursday night at a local open mic, and I've played the last three sans chair.

Good for you! Which do you prefer? Sitting or Standing? Also, what guitar are you playing now? Looks like a Tele.

Thankee! I think that, now that I'm getting used to standing, I prefer it. It's kind of nice to feel a little more mobile and not figuratively tied to a chair.

The guitar is a Fender "Acoustasonic" Telecaster, just came out this year. It's a Tele with a thinline acoustic body, and a combination of acoustic and electric pickups. Very versatile. I have acoustic strings on it right now but it will handle electric ones, too. Fender is staking a sizable gamble on this idea. The head designer is the same guy who did the Taylor T5 before he moved to Fender.

Congratulations on reaching one of your goals Mark! I always play sitting down but I've definitely thought about trying standing up just to see how different it feels. However, I don't really intend to play in public so I always come back to why? I guess step one would be buying a strap!

30 minutes is a long time. How many songs are in your set? If you wouldn't mind sharing, I would be interested to know what your set list includes.

Thanks, Craig!

For a 30 minute set I run between 6-8 songs, usually right at 7. I try to add new stuff to my list, which grows maybe a couple of songs per month. Not counting seasonal stuff like Christmas and St Patrick's Day, this is my current core list I pick from:

1. She Caught the Katy – Taj Mahal (Blues Brothers)
2. Fields of Gold – Sting
3. Father and Son – Cat Stevens
4. The Last Resort – The Eagles
5. Hallelujah – Leonard Cohen (Jeff Buckley)
6. Bama Breeze – Jimmy Buffett
7. I Wanna Learn a Love Song – Harry Chapin
8. Fire at Midnight – Jethro Tull
9. Before You Accuse Me – Bo Diddley (Eric Clapton)
10. Folsom Prison Blues – Johnny Cash
11. Deep Elem Blues – Traditional (Grateful Dead)
12. A Couple More Years – Dr Hook
13. Cooky and Lila – Dr Hook
14. He Went to Paris – Jimmy Buffett
15. Coming Home – The Town Pants
16. The Rose – Bette Midler
17. For Bobbie (For Baby) – John Denver
18. Breathe In, Breathe Out – Jimmy Buffett
19. Rhymes and Reasons – John Denver
20. All My Life’s a Circle – Harry Chapin
21. Standing on the Rock – Ozark Mountain Daredevils
22. Son of a Son of a Sailor – Jimmy Buffett
23. Cinco de Mayo in Memphis – Jimmy Buffett
24. A Pirate Looks at 40 – Jimmy Buffett
25. Peaceful, Easy Feeling – The Eagles
26. Fortune Teller – Allen Toussaint (Robert Plant & Allison Kraus)
27. Hey, Hey, What Can I Do? – Led Zeppelin
28. The Tallest Tree – The Rave-Ups
29. Turn the Page – Bob Seger
30. Angel from Montgomery – John Prine
31. Lyin’ Eyes – The Eagles
32. The Reach – Dan Fogelberg
33. Me and Bobby McGee – Kris Kristofferson (Grateful Dead)
