I think fingerpicking the intro would make it WAY easier. I just could not get it with the cross picking. Kept hitting the wrong strings (the fact that you skip a string makes it particularly tricky!). Are you holding the pick in your hand while doing the intro? I guess I should just go watch your video more closely.....

I probably should have done a bit of a spoken-intro to this song, as it would be tough to notice..

I'm using a pick on the D-string and fingerpicking the G and high E strings with my middle and ring fingers respectively. Seemed the only way I could get it close to clean. Took me a while to get the hang of it though.

This is one of the things I'll be asking about when I upload this to the student channel.. Is what I'm doing in the intro ok?

Nice playing Al, the hybrid picking is coming out very well . I thought you were alternate picking as I could see from the small image. Your reply to Suzi was interesting and we can see it better from a full screen image.

It is a pretty cool song and you do it justice.

You know mate; like an outlaw who has slept rough? Think of the lyrics "I wake up in the morning and I raise my weary head...I got an old coat for a pillow and the earth was last night's bed".

You gotta get in character Al! Imagine what you could have achieved with "Needle and the Damage Done"!

Ah... I see. What a clever idea! I don't remember Neil suggesting that technique in the lesson (though I may have forgotten) but it does seem like a good strategy. You could also try playing the D string with a thumb-pick and the other two with your fingers, I would think. I might actuallly try that, as I own a thumb pick.

Now I'm excited to get back to work on the song!

Al,
Good to see you again. I'm going to go back and watch again for some specific comments, but I want to share this with you. A bit of inspiration. This guy plays it almost note for note the way Ritchie does. And his fingering is the same as Ritchies. I find it easier this way.

I thought you missed a couple notes, but when I went back and looked at it full screen, I saw the one I missed first time through. The bends on the bass notes right after the descending intro are written as quarter bends but I think they sound better if played as halfs instead.
The hybrid picking is fine, no need to worry over that. If that's easier for you, then go for it. I would suggest you try sweeps though instead of alternates. As long as your going down, then pick everything down. When your moving back up, pick up. It makes things a bit easier on this song. And I think Ritchie uses sweep style here also.

Looking good.

Al-

That's some fine pickin' and strumming! I kept waiting to see if you can sing like Jon Bon Jovi!! I know that will be on the final version.

Nice job Al, as always! :cheer:
