Wow. What a great idea. I agree that this is both exciting and do-able given both the technical and musical talent we have on this site. My initial thought would be that the steps to realize this goal would be something like this. Tovo, correct, addend, or disregard as you see fit.

1) choose a song
2) Someone records the background rhythm in a common format (MP3 or wav). This recording is emailed to everyone who would like to contribute.
3) While listening to the background rhythm (with headphones), each participant records a video of him or herself playing his or her version on guitar, harmonica, banjo, mandolin, or ukelele
4) Mark, Neil, or any other other advanced players could add solos of some kind?
5) These contributions are compiled into one recording/video.
6) Vocals are added at this point by Chris, Anton, Goldleaf, or any other singers.
7) Final video completed.

I have no idea if the list above is based in any kind reality, but I must say it is a wonderful idea. I had forgotten about that video to which Bill linked, but it is truly a gem. Let me know how I can help. I'd love to be invovled.
Jay
Jay thanks so much for that, I need guys like you. It's easy to have an idea, I need someone who can outline a simple plan for making it happen. I need someone with the technical know how like Wandoctor or Al to give Jay's list of actions the thumbs up. Then we can go forward with picking a song. This project doesn't need to happen overnight, but hopefully it will happen.

OK having now checked my walls this morning it looks like 'Heart of Gold' is a very popular choice of song, we have rhythm, vocals, harmonica...I'm sure there are others who can contribute.

Heart of Gold then....any violent objections?? I wouldn't think so. Silence is acquiescence.

No violence but I think we have a volunteer for the broom, Willem said he would work on harmonica (not to much in Harvest Moon), need someone who can sing then I could remove any melody and just concentrate on the basic chords. Gary Just another suggestion.

Sorry I've been MIA on this.. Was a bad boy last night.

Jay seems to have a good list there. And it's great that Wandoctor is up for the edit challenge. My sched is about to get very busy in January and I'll be on the road a lot. I wouldn't be able to spend the necessary time to do this great project justice. I would like to be involved though- both musically and technically if I can be of any assistance.

I thought it unusual that you were absent from a technically challenging project Al. No problem regarding your schedule, any contribution is cool and like I said, this will not be an overnight thing.

Just a thought: could we have two rhythm guitarists, one playing in standard tuning, and one capo'd up a few frets? Just an idea. It's something that I'm curious about trying, but haven't done yet. Not even sure it would sound good with this song.

uhhh, yes it could be.

If someone would like to colaborate on something, let me know. I'll try anything once.

Make sure you are in tune :)

Record on your webcam or whatever. Let's shoot for 1024 x 768 video for now.

When you have something done, you can send me the video via box.net or something similar.

I'll either sing or record a second guitar part and mix it in.

I have noticed that when I try to record at 1024 x 768 resolution, my video is choppy and becomes smeared. Is 800 x 600 an option?

**Note to Terry N. and others that were having trouble with this issue in their videos- try the 800 x 600 setting in your video options menu.

There is a rationale, I'm sure, based in music theory, which would explain why this idea would work. I can't explain that rationale at this point, but hope to be able to do so by next summer. My sense is that it would work very nicely with this great song.
