At some point I think one of us needs to make an initial recording as a reference for everyone else.A reference track would be very helpful. I tried playing along to a metronome today and found that tough. Then played along to the NY recording (per Reiver's recommendation) and that was MUCH easier. Or can our reference track just be the original recording?
A long distance collaboration

Has anyone already been working on Heart of Gold? Chris posted a video a couple months back, and it was pretty good, but I don't know if was complete. Neil's lesson was a campfire version, so it lacked a full metronome playthrough.suziko wrote:At some point I think one of us needs to make an initial recording as a reference for everyone else.A reference track would be very helpful. I think that would be a very good idea, Tony. It will solve a lot of timing and pitch issues for you and everyone else.
I might also add, thank you Tony for coming up with this wonderful idea for a project.
And one more suggestion for you, since this is a "TG project", be sure to use ALL of your resources on the site. I would like to see Neil, Matt, Big Jim, etc. contribute to this project too if they are so inclined.

This is a brilliant idea but at present a bit leaderless. I would suggest someone (Tony aka Tovo) pick up the reins here, credit where credits due and all that.
A few suggestions also not in any order;
1. A list of who's in on the collab
2. Who's doing what. playing what part what instrument etc
3. Who is video/editing what resolution
4. Who's the sound/audio tech for assistance, etc
5. Basic song info, tempo
6. What version of the song
7. Timeline for submission (be generous lol)
8. Central Point of Contact for queries
9. Who makes final decisions about whether a vid is in or not!
10. Target date for completion (again flexibility and generosity required)
11. Is Chris allowed to wear a Moody Blues frilly shirt!
12. General guidlines for your contribution e.g. don't use effects with your vid.
Just some thoughts take em or leave em
cheers
Chas

It's a good list Chas. It's not so much that it's leaderless, I just don't see a need to race in and start laying down a heap of rules. So far I know that we have enough interest for the idea to go forward, we have picked the song for our 1st effort, Wandoctor is happy to be the editor, Chris and Tammy are happy to contribute some vocals, Reiver and Willem were happy to add harmonica, and we have a number of people keen to contribute rhythm. So that's all good. The version and the tempo will be solved once we get a reference version. That's the first bit and I am giving people until 15 Jan to come up with a version they are keen to share as a potential reference point. If someone posts a cracker version before that well and good. I agree with your point on effects, no effects. Chris can wear his puffy shirt no worries at all. In terms of using a video or not, I am absolutely not keen to exclude people or turn this into a "you're not good enough" sort of thing so I will work with the editor on the issue.
I'm the central point of contact, happy for people to PM me if they prefer and discuss their suggestions and ideas.
It's not often that the Airfarce even THINKS about leadership so I'm very impressed Chas! (That's a joke for anyone horrified by my rudeness...it's how Kiwis and Aussies communicate with each other)

Fair comment tovo, just that i've previous experience being involved in collaborations on other sites with just writing Tabs and that got messy cos no one really identified as the leader.
The nature of the site and the type of members I agree does lends itself to suggest not to overburden with rules but this site has been bitten a couple of times in the past by a couple of members who with a bit of 'guidance' might still be here. I do think you need a central reference point for whats agreed on i.e. resolution for your vids, tempo that kind of thing. Even if it a post where say you alone could edit 0r ask one of the TG team to create a Sticky post for reference which is locked.
Its amazing what a good Conductor can do with an Orchestra.
Food for thought anyway.

Hey all Just to respond briefly
This is not "TG" project, it is a Tony inspired community project that lives on here.. Neil and I have chatted on this, and it really is your gig, you have the platform here, neither of us want to set any boundaries, and so far you are working yourselves out just nicely indeed...So great to see you work through the issues together..
Not sure what else we can contribute at present..other than encouragement..and of course keep the Target program humming along for all folk..
Anyways just to let you know that the idea is definately unfolding really nicely and that if you need me Tony send me a PM..
The rest of you are doing just a super job
Cheers

One of the real challenges about this LDC is making sure everyone is heard and feels that they have the opportunity to contribute. This is my first effort of course at this type of thing so I'm feeling my way, another reason I don't want to just launch in.
Chas your input is very welcome and exactly what I want. As people think about the task and contribute ideas the "how" will become clearer and clearer, rather than being just an idea.
I won't let it die a horrible, uninspiring death I can promise that.
Matt, no worries at all. The concept for this project was always for it to be a members effort. Bill's comment was about being all inclusive and I support that 100%. If Neil had wanted to break out his harmonica who would I be to stop him? But we can absolutely do this among the members.

Well said Tony. I think that we all appreciate that, although this is a TG Member collaborative project, it is YOUR project. You are the point of contact and you should make any final decisions towards the conclusion.
Up until then, I think that we as members should feel free to contribute in any way we feel appropriate - kazoo, maracas, tambourine, whatever. If we don't make the final cut - so be it.
