Cover of Greg Brown's Hey Baby Hey

I thought I should take a turn at starting a busking thread, so here is a Greg Brown song called Hey Baby Hey. Some of you may know of him as he's been around the folk music scene for a long time. I thought about adding this to the Love Songs busking thread, but decided Mr. Brown probably deserves a thread of his own.

This is a tough song for me to sing, and I tried to let go of my insecurities and really make it work, with mixed results. There aren't any youtube videos of Greg Brown performing this song, so if you want to hear the original, you can download from itunes for 99 cents or something like that. I doubt that you would regret the investment. It's in Open G tuning. Lyrics are below:

Hey Baby Hey - Greg Brown

The Sea Was Rollin' In Slate Gray
i Looked At You And I Looked Away
i Was Cryin'
because I Was Happy

i Didn't Want You To See
i Was Afraid Of Such Mystery
and Afraid Of Losing
so Afraid Of Losing

later On On A Balcony
we Had A Good Talk And We Felt Free
i Was Comin' To You From Far Away
light Was Dim But You Showed Me The Way
in Your Arms All I Could Say Was
hey Baby Hey Baby Hey Baby Hey

my Heart Was Torn I'd Made Up My Mind
i'd Keep To Myself And Just Be Kind
and Need Nothing
just Need Nothing

love My Folks My Kids My Friends
and Make It On Through To The End
no More Suffering
over Loving

you Get To Me Like Old Time Religion Did
in My Heart When I Was A Kid
you're Sweet Gospel Music To My Ears
you Know How To Ease All My Fears
and From My Heart To Yours All I Can Say Is
hey Baby Hey Baby Hey Baby Hey

and As We Go On Through The Deal I
i Know That We Won't Always Feel
real Wonderful
life Ain't Like That

but I Want To Stay Right By Your Side
check Out The View Enjoy The Ride
together
with All Our Loved Ones

i Want To Plant A Little Garden With You Now
take Care Of A Piece Of The Earth Somehow
and Tend It When We're Old And Gray And
try To Straighten Up And Say, Well,
i'm So Glad To See You Today

Jay, I had not heard that one before but really enjoyed it (mark of a good song) and was VERY impressed with your finger picking (i.e. jealous). Did you learn to finger pick here at TG or did you already have the skill before coming here? Now I'm walking around the house singing "hey baby, hey baby, hey baby hey"... it's infectious! Thanks.

Jay!!! Thank you so much for putting up a Greg Brown song. He is my favorite artist (swear to god) and you did an amazing job on it. I'm so glad you're starting this thread. I believe him to be the best kept secret in music. I would give anything to be able to accurately play some of his tunes. Especially...Spring Wind, Telling Stories, Lull it bye , and so may others. He lives in a little town in southeast Iowa close to where my mom is from. I've seen him live a time or two...he is a true original. Anyways, sorry about all the fanaticism for Mr. Brown...back to your performance.

Tough to sing a song of his...what with that low as a billy goat voice of his. I thought you did Greg proud! Did you just sound that out or pick it up from tabs? I think he is in open C for (Let me be your gigolo and Jesus & Elvis)
Are you going to do anymore? Gosh I hope so...
