Bill,

I don't know how long it has been since I've heard this song, but I do know it's been a long time ago.

You did a great job playing, singing & telling the story.

Thanks for sharing....

Thanks David, Willem, Bart and Bob. Yeah that song is not one of Croce's better known tunes, but I always liked it. Thanks for listening and watching.

Yes Sir a good old southern Illinois country boy.Having a real bad time.

I just love the way this man wrote a lyric line. A lot of great lines in this tune.

Well out of southern Illinois
Come a down-home country boy
He gonna make it in the city
Playin' guitar in the studio
Well he hadn't been there an hour
When he met a Broadway flower
You know she took him for his money
And she left him in a cheap hotel

Well it's easy for you to see
That that country boy was me
Say and how am I ever gonna
Break the news to the folks back home?
I was gonna be a great success Things sure ended up a mess
But in the process I got messed up too
Well I got another to dread, you know I got a pipe upside my head, you know they took me for my money and took my guitar too.

Hello momma and dad I had to call collect
'Cause I ain't got a cent to my name
Well I'm sleepin' in a hotel doorway
And tonight they say it's gonna rain
And if you'd only send me some money
I'll be back on my feet again
Send it in care of the Sunday Mission
Box Number Ten

Well back in southern Illinois
They still worryin' 'bout their boy
But this boy's goin' home
As soon as he gets the fare
Because the minute I got my bread
I got a pipe upside my head
You know they left me in an alley
Took my money and my guitar too

Hello momma and dad I had to call collect
'Cause I ain't got a cent to my name
Well I'm sleepin' in a hotel doorway
And tonight they say it's gonna rain
And if you'd only send me some money
I'll be back on my feet again
Send it in care of the Sunday Mission
Box Number Ten

Send it in care of the Sunday Mission
Box Number Ten

( I just get a kick out of the chorus lyrics.)

I did enjoy your take on the song. Real nice work with the right hand bass notes work. I also like the way you got the big bend on the upper note. Thanks for sharing.
BRAVO!!!

Thanks Kev,
I knew I'd hear from you sooner or later, big Croce fan that you are. I don't think too many people have heard or remember this one. Another one of Croce's great hooks like: "You know he always got an extra pack of cigarettes rolled up in his T-shirt sleeve."He's got a tattoo on his arm that say Baby and another one that just say Hey, but evr'y Sunday afternoon he is a dirt track demon in a 57 Chevrolet. " Great stuff. Thanks for tuning in.

RAPID ROY THAT STOCK CAR BOY

Jim had a lot of fun tunes like that one.

Gonna tell you a story that you won't believe
But I fell in love last Friday evenin'
With a girl I saw on a bar room TV screen
Well I was just gettin' ready to get my hat
When she caught my eye and I put it back
And I ordered myself a couple o' more shots and beers

The night that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen
(Round 'n' round, oh round 'n' round)
The meanest hunk o' woman
That anybody ever seen
Down in the arena

She is a five foot six and two fifteen
A bleached-blonde mama with a streak of mean
She knew how to knuckle
And she knew how to scuffle and fight
And the roller derby program said
That she were built like a 'fridgerator with a head
The fans called her "Tuffy"
But all her buddies called her "Spike"

You know the night that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen
(Round 'n' round, oh round 'n' round)
The meanest hunk o' woman
That anybody ever seen
Down in the arena

Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round

Well I could not help it but to fall in love
With this heavy-duty woman I been speakin' of
Things looked kind of bad
Until the day she skated into my life

Well she might be nasty she might be fat
But I never met a person who would tell her that
She's my big blonde bomber
My heavy handed Hackensack mama

The night (you know) that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen
(Round 'n' round, oh round 'n' round)
The meanest hunk o' woman
That anybody ever seen
Down in the arena
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round
Round 'n' round

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
