Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks were pretty popular in the West Coast music scene in the early 1970s. Dan just recently died here in Northern California and it got me reliving some of his songs. His sound was rooted in old-time music, combining elements of bluegrass, swing, and folk, and generally infused with humor. The chord progressions were rarely I-IV-V patterns and frequently based more on jazz and even country blues.

How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away? is from The Hot Licks self-titled debut album, the first of 4 that really defined Dan's style. Look for the key first, finding the chord that feels like home, then look at the expected chords in that key, and some a little outside the inner circle. Picking out the bass notes and passing runs will be helpful. How many parts are there and is there anything unusual about the arrangement?

Enjoy, and PM me with your thoughts, suspicions and/or conclusions.
