Hey Gang,
I know many guitar players think they could never learn to read music. I will admit that is not as necessary as when I started, mostly due to the evolution of tablature, but it can be very rewarding to play single line melodies, like those found in lead sheets for jazz and popular tunes. I propose that it is easier than you think to get a functional level of reading with a solid understanding of rhythms written out along with simple melodies, starting in first position on the guitar.
The challenge here is to dedicate 5 minutes a day for the rest of July toward a better understanding of music notation. We have made our 8-part series 'The Guide To Reading Music' free for all and would love to see posts here about your thoughts and progress.
The attachments will be posted here as .png files that you should be able to download and print. You should be able to use the 'Save Image As' command to download the file, or try using 'Open Image In A New Tab" then print.
Let's get started with Lessons #1 and #2, and the attachment that goes with them, and every couple days we will post the following ones.

OK, I'm in. Always ready to improve.
Over did it, about 10 minutes tonight with the charts and over view of lesson 1. Fortunately my parents had me take piano lessons for several tears in grade school. Piano lessons were a great base that helped me immensely when I took up the guitar at age 10. I have kept the habit since the last contest and pick up one of my guitars for about 15 minutes a day if I don't have time to do my normal playing!
An important note-
The Guide To Reading Music Package is not free as our platform does not allow for Free Packs. It does let us make Free Lessons, so the 8 lessons are free now. The attachments may not be accessible on the lessons pages but will be posted here, on the Forum.
