Rick - I would have to relearn reggae myself before I was much help to any one else. I haven't played it much at all since I left the band.

Yes, most of the reggae we played was 2 chords back and forth. The main thing is the rhythm. However, there is more complicated reggae also.

Reggae is a kind of a feel, syncopated and played on the off beats (2 and 4). On the keyboards for rhythm parts I would play the bass notes on 1 and 3 and the chords on 2 and 4. A simple beat might go, 1 & (bass notes) 2 (chord) 3 & (bass) 4 (chord).

The guitar player in our band played quarter note downs on the 2 and 4 beats mainly. He would then mix it up doing 8th note ups on the &s.

Another reggae guitar player actually played mainly upstrokes. I guess it's really a kind of a feel. If you listen to a reggae band and try to follow what they are doing you will get the feel for it, it is very rhythm driven.

Also, it's hard for me explaining reggae as it pertains to guitar as I played keyboards. Except for some fooling around on my own I have not really played reggae guitar.

I'm trying to learn the keyboard; in my spare time!! My mother majored in music and was a symphony/concert-level performer in her day. Clearly, I didn't get the gene!!

Ric, the time is prime to strike up the band again. there seems to be a huge resurgence of reggae/funk/dub bands on the scene lately -- at least in the northeast (i live in the Boston 'Burbs). a couple that i really like are Spiritual Rez (who have the shortest guitar player i've ever seen, but boy can that little mofo shred), and The Alchemystics. Also quite good are Rubblebucket Orchestra (lots of horns!). A lot of them seem to be spinning out of Berkeley School of Music.

Sucker! Ever notice how people who have dedicated their whole lives to some pursuit can inspire those of us with meager talent (speaking solely for myself!) to aspire to greatness? They make it look so darned easy. It's just fingers on a little fretbaord right?
