You actually want a Resonator a Dobro is a brand and a generic style of playing with the guitar lying flat infront of you, often have square necks. Very similar in manufacture as both use a resonating spun aluminium cone inside the body to trasmit the sound Knopler uses a National Style 0 Resonator guitar, from 1937 as used on "Romeo and Juliet".
