Lyrics that have hit home.....

I have really been listening to a lot of music lately and I have hit a great streak of songs that have always spoken (corny cliche) to me. We have had threads in the past that discussed what grabs people; Music/Riffs/Melodies or Lyrics.

For the record, it is both for me... Some songs the music catches me, and others it is the lyrics...

In the lyrics department, there are just some out there that have had an impression on me due to life and the ride it has given me. I know we all have songs like that. What bits and pieces of songs, maybe a verse here or chorus there, have hit home with you?????

1. A current one for me is from a Tom Petty song called "Crawling Back to You" off of the Wild Flowers album. One of the verses has a couple of lines that go: "I'm so tired of being tired, sure as night will follow day. Most things I worry about, never happen anyway." Surely not profound, but just hits home for me.

2. Another is "Against the Wind" by Bob Seger. "I'm older now but still running..... against the wind." There are times when the road certainly seems to be going uphill or that you are fighting against the wind....

The list goes on, and gets quite lengthy.... B) I'll add more as they come to me.

I very much enjoy good lyrics. Sometimes I wonder why, when the artist knows that once released the tune is out there forever, they come up with such crappy lyrics. Anyway, some that are not crappy (in my mind at least) from music I have very recently been listening to include:

"I love my lady, she's long and lean...you mess with her you'll see a man get mean"

"I stepped out of Memphis when I was 10 years old, with a suit cut sharp as a razor and a heart made of gold. I had a guitar hanging just above waist high, and I'm gonna play that thing until the day I die"

"Once I lived the life of a millionaire, spent all my money, I just did not care.
Took all my friends out for a mighty good time, bought bootleg whiskey, champagne and wine.Then I began to fall so low, lost all my good friends, had nowhere to go.
I get my hands on a dollar again, I'm gonna hang on to it till that ol' eagle grins".

Great thread idea, Jason! I do love a good bit of song writing, though I admit that plenty of the songs I love don't really have great lyrics. I like them for other reasons, maybe the way the singer sings, or how the instruments sound. That said, there are certain songs that really resonate with my, lyrically. Just a couple of examples:

Tony: Pride and Joy by Stevie Ray is a great example... love those myself...

Suzi: You just can't go wrong with another Stevie.... Also, the Joni Mitchell song... I recently found a copy of a song book for her. It has many of her classic hits with TAB and shows what is supposed to be the original tunings for all of them. I had never really listened to her much when I was younger, but since picking up the guitar and hearing her once in a while on my Pandora channel, I have really grown to enjoy that song quite a bit. Great example... B) Like I said, sometimes the music catches you instead of the lyrics...
