Hmmmm.....good question of course.....and too many to mention. I'm a sucker for lyrics, yes for music as well, that goes without saying right?? ;)

But to describe the last decade of my life, this one surely has done it during that time:

'I don't wanna die, but I ain't keen on living either'....Robbie Williams. (Sorry, no poetry, or deep whatevers)

Well I'm in a different place now, so need to find another line! ;)

Oh and the 'If you smile at me, I will understand, cause that is something, everybody, everywhere, does in the same language', ábsolutely LOVE that one ever since I heard it as a kid. Oooooooh don't get me started!

Great thread idea, Jason! I do love a good bit of song writing, though I admit that plenty of the songs I love don't really have great lyrics. I like them for other reasons, maybe the way the singer sings, or how the instruments sound. That said, there are certain songs that really resonate with my, lyrically. Just a couple of examples:

"The best thing you ever done for me, was to help me take my life less seriously. It's only life, after all!" Closer to Fine, the Indigo Girls

"I've been afraid of changing cos I built my life around you. But time makes you bolder, even children get older. And I'm getting older, too." Stevie Nicks, Landslide

"I've looked at life from both sides now, from win and lose and still somehow, it's life's illusions I recall. I really don't know life at all." Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now

Another impossible task. :)

Suez, those song and lyrics speak to me too.

A few others:

- Crazy Game - Indigo Girls

Crazy game, i never should have started to play, but now you couldn't tear me away cause love is sweet, sweet baby. so good to you and so bad and i fear, the situation's clear before my eyes. confusion wants to break me and it tries but i've been a little bit stronger from the start listen to my heart

In a similar vein:

Beautiful Mess - Jason Mraz - I like the whole song but these always stand out for me.

But I like being submerged in your contradictions, dear

What a beautiful mess this is. It's like taking a guess when the only answer is "Yes"

1000 Things - Jason Mraz - I love the way it expresses the complex things you feel when you're in love and its playfulness.

Well I've seen a thousand things in one place
But I stopped my counting when I saw your face
Erasing memory I feel as though I've never seen a face before

There are really too many. These are just a few songs that catch my attention when I hear them and stick in my head. They're not the best lyrics...I can just never remember all the songs I like well enough to ever answer that question.

Excellent, excellent thread! I'm already looking up the songs posted here.... good stuff. I typically don't remember lyrics so well but there are a few standouts on my playlist at the moment.

I haven't been online in a while, trying to catch up on all the great threads out there!

My humble contributions:

I'm a guy with a guitar
singing a song for you - Mishka

I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day - Bruce Springsteen- The Promised Land

The book of love has music in it
In fact that's where music comes from
Some of it's just transcendental
some of it's just really dumb - The Magnetic Fields - The Book of Love

Everybody says that living is easy
I can barely see cause my head's in the way
Tigers walk behind me, they are to remind me
that I'm lost - but I'm not afraid - David Byrne - Life is Long

Freedom is seldom found
by beating someone to the ground - Amos Lee - Freedom

We scheme about the future
and we dream about the past
when just a simple reaching out
will build a bridge that lasts - John Hiatt - Through Your Hands

and for those of you that began your musical journey years ago with turntables like I did I offer you this song from Todd Snider aptly named Vinyl Records:

I've got a dusty old pile of vinyl records sittin' on my floor
I've played each one of 'em over and over a dozen times or more
All I've got is a beat up chair a mattress a fork and another to spare
And that dusty old pile of records on my floor

I got Willie, Waylon and Woody Guthrie
Jimmy Buffett, Lyle Lovett and Bobby Gentry
Jerry Jeff, Bob Dylan, Donnie Fritts,
The Dead, The Doors, Patsy Cline, John Prine and more
I got Jackson Browne, Townes Van Zandt, Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Harry Chapin, Guy Clark and Van Halen
I got Rita, Kris, Keith Sykes and Country Joe when he was singin' with the Fish you know
I got Emmylou, U2 and Arlo, James Taylor, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Mojo Nixon,
Hendrix, Haggard and a whole lot more
In that dusty old pile of vinyl records I got sittin' on my floor

One time in San Francisco
I was standin' in an airport line
In one bag I had all my clothes and in the other was all them ol' records of mine
The lady said I could only bring one bag
I had two, Oh what a drag
I had to jump on the plane and leave all my clothes behind

But I got Willie, Waylon and Woody Guthrie
Jimmy Buffett, Lyle Lovett and Bobby Gentry
Jerry Jeff, Bob Dylan, Donnie Fritts,
The Dead, The Doors, Patsy Cline, John Prine and more
I got Jackson Browne, Townes Van Zandt, Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Harry Chapin, Guy Clark and Van Halen
I got Rita, Kris, Keith Sykes and Country Joe when he was singin' with the Fish you know
I got Emmylou, U2 and Arlo, James Taylor, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams, Mojo Nixon,
Hendrix, Haggard and a whole lot more
I got all of Booker T's, Tom T. Hall's,
Bobby Bare, Belafonte and the New York Dolls,
Billy Joe, Jimmy Croce, Kiss, Crosby Stills and Nash,
John, June and Roseanne Cash
I got Forbert, Fromholtz, Stevie Ray,
T-Birds, Yardbirds, Sam and Dave,
And as some of y'all mighta guessed already
I got piles and piles and piles of Tom Petty
In that dusty old pile of vinyl records I got sittin' on my floor

I'm currently walking home while listening to Anouk, hence the inspiration for this addition. She has SO many GREAT songs including 'Sacrifice', 'Lost' and 'Fallen Sun', but to name a few. Her songs have such strongly evocative lyrics that often go straight to the heart of the matter, no beating around the bush. And then there's the music which then finishes the sucker punch. So here's just one example:

Fallen Sun - I don't know much, but I know how to love you and that's all I need to know.

Hi all ...

When Simon and Garfunkel performed in Central Park, New York in 1981, they added a new verse to "The Boxer".
How deep this is ? Very deep ? Or just a patch ? I'm still not sure myself, but at least they did try something special for the reunion.

Now the years are rolling by me
They are rocking evenly
I am older than I once was
But younger than I'll be
That's not unusual
No, it isn't strange
After changes upon changes
We are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same

Lie la lie...

I always sing that verse Pierre... really fits well and there's some wisdom there.

Hey M.J.
I love your thread here...sorry for not responding to this sooner. Frankly I couldn't decide on a particular song's lyrics. There are just too darn many that speak to me and I am quite fond of...(I am one of those gobber-goonballs that looks for answers to the mysteries of the universe in song lyrics. So I guess it is not too surprising that I would like a range of songs and their lyrics.) This is from Texan songwriter, Bob Schneider. I have two or three of his CDs and have never been disappointed with his thought provoking & quirky lyrical stylings.

" BLUE SKIES FOR EVERYONE"

Spit on the ground, hold your breath
try to scare yourself to death
bury your bones under the dirt
tear your drawers and rip your shirt
stomp your feet in disgust
curse the grey skies if you must
but you'll find when you are done
the blue sky's for everyone

Take up the wine and break your heart
give up the race before you start
drop your drawers and roll around
burn your house right to the ground
go to sleep hit your head
scream until your face is red
but you'll find when you are done
blue sky's for everyone

blue skies, setting sun
cherry pie, bubble gum
lullabies to be sung
blue skies for everyone

so get right down on your luck
spin your wheels until you're stuck
bring out the blood and let it dry
stick a big needle in your eye
dry your tears and drop your drink
let me tell you what I think
I think you'll find when you are done
the blue sky's for everyone

blue skies, setting sun
cherry pie,bubble gum
lullabies to be sung
blue skies for everyone

there'll be blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
I'd like blue skies
I'd like blue skies
I'd like blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies for everyone
there'll be blue skies
