A few weeks ago, I decided I wanted to learn to play the bass. On the advice my brother, who has been playing since we were children, I started to listen closely to the bass lines of some of my favorite target songs. Today as I was working through Vanessa's excellent lesson on "The Only Living Boy in New York," I realized that here was another beautiful bass line by Joe Osborn. If you have any interest at all in the bass, I would strongly encourage you to get to know his work. You're going to discover that you already do, but it's definitely worth a closer look to appreciate what a huge contribution he made to the sound of popular music in the 1960s and 70s.

Here is something to aspire to:

Michele,
I just reread your thread from a whike back on starting to play the bass and watched your video of "Ain't No Sunshine." Are you still playing? I'm trying to work myself into this in much the same way you had described. Any tips or advice would be very welcome.

Hi Stuart,

Gosh that was the first bass video I ever put up. I have uploaded a fair few videos with bass since then. I'm pretty much just playing it when I'm working on a project that calls for the bass. So... I'm no where near where I should be given how long I've had it. I've been bouncing around doing different things rather than focusing on learning it in a systematic way.

But the really cool thing about playing the bass is that you don't need to play anything very fancy for it to sound good in the mix things. Just playing roots and fifths already adds heaps.

Here's a link to video that David and I put up recently.

And others in the community play the bass now. Sandy has one, and Neil has even given some pointers in one of his fly on the wall lessons.

You should absolutely learn the bass, it's great fun. Tips, just start but playing the root note of each chord to some of your favourite songs, once you've added some rhythm, you're playing the bass. :) it's cool. Neil gives more tips in the lesson I've inserted a link to above.

Have fun.

Michele

The bass playing in The Only Living Boy In New York is just gorgeous. I indeed had read that there is some overdubbing in there, which made it hard duplicate later.

I thought that Pino Paladino does a fantastic job on it as well.

Great to hear you're enjoying the lesson!

I've been down in the basement with this song and the bass for the past few weeks. Getting close to having a transcription I'm satisfied with. Here's the effort so far, in case anyone else has an interest in getting in touch with their lower end.

Hmm. Can't post a pdf to the site. I'll come back and sort that out once I'm ready to post a video.

I had some trouble with some PDF files in the past too.. I converted to a text file, and it uploaded. Format was a bit of a challenge though. Took a few tries to get it lined up...
