Or maybe your guitar is already spooky !

I've only recently come to appreciate Guy Clark's genius.
Too late ... he left us in May. RIP, Guy Clark.

Here is a sample tune, "The Guitar", in 2 complementary performances.
The first needs no explanation, but the second is by Verlon Thompson,
who was Guy Clark's right-hand man, and his own performance after his
buddy's departure has a very personal (even spooky) note.

Oh yeah: of course, you gotta listen to the first version first !

Pierre!!

Thanks so much for posting those two videos, especially the second one. I too just became familiar with Guy Clark because I was asked to sing his "Home Grown Tomatoes" at a country fair last month. Since that time I've been listening to his and Verlon's music. It's strange how so many great artists only get discovered by the larger population after they've gone.

Knowing about "The Guitar" ahead of this post made it so much more poignant. I'm surprised Verlon was able to keep it together while he told that story and sang the song.

There's a lesson to be learned here about legacies. Rest in peace Guy Clark!

Thanks for posting this,

Bill

Pierre,
What a great song! Both performances are so good.

Is this the same Guy Clark I hear on the Bluesville Channel on SiriusXM?

I enjoy story telling songs like this so much! Great post...

With this being said, maybe we can talk David Finn into posting his song that he wrote about the Queen? He played it at IGC camp for us and it was a great story telling song.

Hey Pierre. many thx , that's a great song. I wasn't really familiar with Guy Clark's work , but since Neil's recent LA Freeway lesson i've resolved to find out more about him.

Bart -- thx but you are way too kind my friend haha, i wouldn't go pitching any of my recent songs against the Guy Clarks of this world.... i think' The Lady In A Headscarf' is up there with the videos Larry recently posted from the first night open-mics at camp. Shel and I haven't done a Time Zone Zombies version yet so that is the only video that exists for this song. Fortunately i don't think the Queen will have seen it yet :)

Agreed, these stories are excellent.
Interesting how evil (ha) our guitars can be to us, but have a way of uniting us.

Pierre,

Thanks for posting! I had seen the first video, but not the second.

I have a couple of his CDs - Dublin Blues & Workbench Songs - both good and a live CD with Guy, Steve Earle, Townes van Zandt at the Bluebird Cafe, which is great.

I saw someone lead "The Cape" at a slow jam once - that would be a good song to learn.

Jim
