If you want to learn lots of techniques (in full detail) and to master them, then I would 200% reccomend "The Christopher Parkening Guitar Method Vol. 1" book, it has tons of great techniques, including arpeggios, and ton's of helpful hints and ways to minimize movevents in your left hand. It helped me and built the foundation for me.

I'm not really a good player, haven't practiced for a while and got not much experience but I'd like you to recommend me some good starting songs and exercises which I can find online.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum! If you are on this site why don't you look around here and see all the free stuff that Neil has posted. There is tons of good stuff on-line but this site is far and away the best I've found. I've been so impressed I eventually joined the TARGET program and after years of inactivity and lack of progress my guitar playing has really improved.

Go thru the beginner lessons and brush up on your technique and then try a few of the easier songs. You'll be in to the tougher songs in no time!

Happy playin!

BIgbear says it all really, some of us on here have a lot of experience in searching for good places to learn and virtually without exception we all agree this is a great place to be and has to be the best currently around. If you like the free stuff i'd recommend joining TARGET, I put off joining for some time but now i'm there it's great and has a lot of variety to keep you gainfully occupied for ages

Welcome 16002300.

And great advice guys, but I would add just one more
thing. Playing the guitar must be FUN for you. That's
why most of us play.
Totally Guitars is a great site and certainly the
TARGET program is well worth the money. The best I
have seen. On this site you can learn everything from
the very basics for beginners to some pretty advanced
playing, but it does not contain all playing styles.
In addition to this site, find a couple of songs that
you like (maybe they aren't on TG yet, or maybe they
never will be) and are in the guitar style you want to
play and, most of all, are within your own level of talent.
A couple of songs like that (and YES, there are some
easy Classical, head-banging rock n roll, blues, jazz,
etc. etc.) will keep it fun for you and may keep you
from just putting the guitar down when your fingers
start to get a little sore.

I have known soooooo many guitartist over the years that
got bored and put their guitar in the closet and never
picked it up again. Frustration is normal, but just
keep going. It's not a race, slow and steady does it.

Having fun is key. Pick any of your favorite guitarists
and remember that they loved playing before they ever
made a dime doing it professionally.

Haoli- as usual you make an excellent point. Sometimes we get so caught up on our own progress that we forget that this is supposed to be fun. If it isn't it becomes work.

It is also worth noting that as great as Totally Guitars and TARGET are, they are but one tool, albeit an extremely useful one. TG can't be all things to all people. I forget sometimes that Neil and I are close to the same age and the songs he placed on this site were the songs I grew up with. But that certainly won't be the case for everyone.

Despite being a very satisfied TARGET member I still surf the Internet looking for a new song or lesson. That's what keeps it fresh for me!

411,

There are literally hundreds of guitar resources on the net. The big problem is which ones are worth your time.
$20 a month seems like a lot until you do some pricing for guitar lessons. Call a few places near you and see what they charge.
Neil is a professional guitar teacher and actually knows what he is doing. I doubt very seriously that you will find the same level of ability in most teachers local to your area and certainly not for that price.

Great point Andy! I took lessons for only one year, but it was $100 - $125 per month for a half hour one day a week. This site, at $20 per month has been so great to this point. Not only does Neil give some darn good lessons, but I have found that other users have tons of great input as well. The forum here is amazing for getting missing pieces of anybody's music knowledge.
