Yet another artist who's voice I think has held up pretty well despite a ton of abuse is Lindsay Buckingham. Chas saw FM just recently so I'd be interested in his opinion on that but the Youtube stuff I have seen of Lindsay, he still sounds great to me.

The solo special he did a year or two ago showed that his voice is still strong and flexible. He sounded great! His guitar playing wasn't bad either for an old banjo picker! :cheer:

Certainly more known for their playing rather than singing, I would put these two as some of the rare ones that have lost next to nothing (voice) over the years although they've certainly did a great deal of damage to their bodies....... They are coming around again this summer................

Just stay wasted most of your musical career and no one will notice whether you can sing or not! LOL!

Very interesting topic especially since I'm one of the voices that have come out of the closet recently. I will be very interesting to hear what our voice coach has to say about many things related to the voice. I went to hear Roy Clark about a year ago at a dinner show in a Casino in Reno NV and it was really sad, in the sense that he still continues to preform, at least sing. It actually hurt to listen to him. He didn't sing too much and had some great young talent in his band that helped make up for his singing. The show ticked was a free part of a package deal. I have never sang very much in the past, I wonder what effect that has on the voice as it ages, does it preserve it or does it atrophy?? Gary

Gary, I told you how much I loved your voice on the Heart of Gold collaboration, it had real soul to it. I believe it's use it or lose it as you get older (all of us here except the U30's). The voice is controlled by muscles and tissues that lose their tone and flexibility with time so giving the voice a workout without taxing it too much can only be good and is the only way to grow and nurture it. I'm sure Jim will fill us in on the facts here.

I agree I thought Gary's voice was very well suited to the tune. (no slight on you intended there Chris, you know I think you have a nice voice)

No worries Tony, you're right on the money with Gary.
My best music friends often tell me my voice is too "sweet" for this or that! They don't mean me harm... and they are right, I was never going to be a rock ,n, roller. :-)

... and I forgot to mention our most prominent exit from the closet... TG Matt!! That was cool!

Thanks Tony for the compliment and Chris I think you are rights about use it or lose it although I think with many professional singers they over use their voice. Sure would be nice to have some expert opinions and I look forward to hearing from Jim? I also agree it was great having Matt jump in. I think the more people that sing the better, I think it helps motivate others to finally say, what the heck and try it. I have learned recently through our collaboration that it is natural for people to not like the sound of their own voice or at least be more critical than they should. Gary

Interesting and quite accurate observation Chris.

My voice though has gotten stronger and more versatile with age, I can do things now I couldn't do when I was younger.

I came to an Aha! moment a few years ago regarding singing and it changed my vocal abilities for the better. Will it deteriorate with age maybe, but I plan on exercising it to try to keep it in good shape.

rc, that Aha moment that helped improve your singing, would you please share it with us that are just starting to give a little more thought to adding singing along with our guitar playing but still lack a lot of the basic knowledge on how to use & improve our voice. I would appreciate any tips you may have. Gary
