Wow, this is a GREAT topic. I am very fond of microbrews, and have tried many. The opening of Bevmo has really been a wonder as well. The order that I prefer in styles is:
1. India Pale Ale - a little on the strong side and a higher alcohol content (was originally that way to preserve it on the long trips from Western Europe over to Inda - hence the name).
2. Pale Ale
3. Porters
4. Stouts
5. Barley Wine
6. Pilsners and Lagers, only if I have too - a bit too bitter for me.
Now, when it comes to IPA's, there are many good ones. At the current moment, my favorite is from West Coast Brewing in N. San Diego County. Very yummy. Racer 5, Stone, Eel River, Sweetgrass, and Big Daddy are all wonderful as well.
Also, West Coast and Stone both make wonderful Smoked Porters.
I brewed for several years, and had some success, but it is a very time consuming endeavor. Well worth it when you get that recipe just right though.
Cheers!

Probably my second favorite (clean) topic after the guitar.......lol My buddy that I go backpacking with every year is an avid IPA'er as well. So when he drives over from Northern CA to meet me o the East Side, we both have samplings of our favorites and anything new that might have popped up. Lots of times we will make trips to get growlers as well. I can usually stop at Indian Wells Breweing on the way up the 395 corridor. He will usually pick something up from Sequoia brewing. Also very yummy. As I type this, I am cracking open a West Coast IPA to start practice.Well there's some karma for teaching me something about beer, MJ!
