Should you get an ipad for TG? (I just did :)

Yes, several companies make stands for it, but you can also put it on a music stand. That's about as convenient as it gets.

I never thought of a music stand. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best!

Congrats Al! I may end up with version two some time in the future. Next for me is the iPhone 4, hopefully next month.
Here's to hoping one day TG can get ahold of some app developers to work on a Totally Guitars apps for iPhone and iPad, talk about Totally Killer!

I love using my iPad with TG. It works great! In addition there are a lot of great apps that will do everything from playing guitar pro tab files, to functioning as effect boxes to acting as metronomes or drum kits. Congrats on the new toy.

I've had my iPad 3g for over a month now and love it for a many various reasons. The battery on the iPad is great, it's the longest lasting battery for a portable device I've used.

As we all know there are thousands of incredible apps, but two of my favorite guitar apps are "TabToolkit" & "GuitarToolkit". TabToolkit will display and play GuitarPro files, it will also display your .pdf music files, and organize them into a convenient database. GuitarToolkit is an app that's like a swiss army knife for guitar players, it's got a metronome, chord finder, a tuner that will tune to many common tunings. There is also a FakeBook app, and a few .pdf reader apps specifically geared towards creating a database for your music and then being able to design your own playlist for different occasions.

Here's the one drawback so far, I love playing outside on my deck, but the iPad screen is not great in bright sunlight, and the iPad will overheat if left sitting in the sun. But if I stay under the covered porch section of my deck all is fine.

Hey there,

I'm back from my trip and was able to put the iPad through a few more tests. Still a big thumbs up from me!

A few new things I learned--
- you can actually RENT movies from iTunes! You buy it for about $5, and download it. You then have 30 days to watch it, but once you start watching it, you have to finish it within 48 hours. After that, it's deleted automatically from your hard drive.
- you can use iTunes to sync your personal photos, so the iPad can become like one of those photo/LCD displays
- you can activate and deactivate the 3G option as you need it. I paid for it for the month for the trip I was on, but will cancel now that I'm back and go off wifi. Also had no problems with reception in the Rockies.

Hey still very much on topic, I was chatting to a friend yesterday who mentioned he had significant issues with the wifi signal on his iPad. He said the signal varies dramatically from room to room. Could be his network, but the guy is no tech numpty so I doubt it's that kind of problem.

Anyone else notice poor wifi performance? I'm very keen on this device but that would be a show-stopper for me.

I've actually been having trouble with my Internet connection in general for a while- so it's tough for me to tell. I do know that the 3G on the iPad seems pretty fast, but can't comment on the wifi right now. Even my desktop is slow- tough to watch vids on TG in general until I figure out what's wrong.

Thanks Al. I had the same issue recently, my internet was as slow as a wet week. Then I realised I had exceeded my monthly download limit of 30gb. My internet service provider had shaped my speed. Reminded me of what dial up is like...and it blows.

When I lived in Sweden there was no limit and blazing fast internet everywhere. That's the action I'm after.

Just out of interest, do you have monthly limits in the States?

Can't speak for 'the States', Tony. Know what I'm talkin' aboot?
I think it just depends what plan you sign up for-- full high speed- lite etc.

I've never had this issue before though, and it sucks! Takes waaay too long to view any videos- Neil's included! I have a call into my ISP and they're looking into it. I've got a bad feeling that it's a virus and I'll have to take my computer in to get it looked at.

Back on topic- the 3G on the ipad works well, so I just need to figure out a way to wrestle it from my daughter, and I'll be golden!

Not been paying too much attention to the Ipad & Iphone issue in the past except to see that the Ipad seems to be TG compatible and I think I saw that the Iphone works too...I was just wondering if anyone who has been paying attention can tell me if TG works well on the Iphone? I just signed up for a 3G 32 GB. Am I going to be TGing on my new Iphone?

Tony, I'm just ordering my new home internet and they are offering speed and not quantity. I'm assuming it's unlimited. How the heck would I know how many MB I download a month? I haven't a clue! I'm assuming the 1GB/month I have on the new Iphone is going to be enough though I have no way of estimating it and no one seems keen to give you an estimate (phone companies like complicated offers). Anyway Cablecom are offering me anywhere from 500 to 100'000 kbps download for my home internet. I'm going for 20'000 kbps download and 2'000 kbps uploads as that's only 50 dollars a month and seems likely to be enough. Just checked the speed of the connection I using at work at the moment and it's delivering 6000Kbps and it's working ok. You just used up 30GB in one month? I think you just sucked all the known particles of the universe up into your compi... no wonder it's slowed up! My old internet connection used to slow up around 23 hrs local time... my best friend's wife told me it's because all the local husbands are on the porn sites!! Or TG, I guess!
