Vancouver, BC: Musical icon, Bob Ezrin announces that more than 50 of the country's best and brightest young artists gathered today at The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver to record a song dedicated to the recovery efforts in earthquake ravaged Haiti.

The song, a rendition of hip-hop artist, K'naan's "Wavin' Flag" will be released in the coming weeks with proceeds going to Free The Children, War Child Canada and World Vision Canada.

"With the wealth of young artists coming out of Canada, it was obvious that this is something we had to do," says Ezrin. "K'naan's lyrics in Wavin' Flag embody the pain, passion and determination of the Haitian people and lend the hope of a brighter future. The response from the artists has been sensational, and I am so proud that together we may help to make a difference."

The Top 100 Canadian Singles, acccording to Bob Mersereau’s new book:
(List in next post)

“Canadian music is the most underserved section in the shelves of bookstores wherever you go,” Mersereau said on the eve of Friday’s launch of his substantial and well illustrated coffee-table book, The Top 100 Canadian Singles, the follow-up to his 2007 best-seller, the divisive and much-discussed The Top 100 Canadian Albums.

“British and American music is covered extensively. Hundreds of books have been written about the influence, nuances, characters and legacies of British and American musicians, but books about Canadians are strangely absent.”

Mersereau’s efforts to redress that imbalance have been processed in a uniquely Canadian way – by committee. In 2009 he recruited more than 800 “jurists” – journalists, deejays, musicians, managers, agents, instrument makers, roadies, radio and music TV personalities, record company executives, music video producers and “just plain music fans” – to submit their lists of the Top 10 Canadian singles.

“A committee vote is a consensus,” Mersereau said. “Anyone who had the passion to contact me had a vote. A critics’ poll might not have engaged Canadians in the same way.”

Parameters were wide and loose. The only real entry qualifications were that the performer had to be technically Canadian, no matter where he/she lives now or came from, and that the work submitted was released on any platform either as a stand-alone recording or video, not as part of a collection.

“This isn’t about chart success or record sales … we already know what those songs are,” the author said. “I wanted to make it a popular vote, as open as possible, because Canadians really know and love their music. We have a different view of the world, one that finds expression in the popular music made in this country.”
