Now before anyone gets a little upset this thread has been sanctioned by TG, its also as the Title says a guide for keeping safe, these are not TG rules although the Moderators may employ some of them from time to time. You can choose to read this or ignore it. I do suggest you read this as it can help you keep safe and also help you from inadvertently offending others. I intend placing a series of these up over the next few weeks or so as there is rather a lot to cover.

The First Measure

When in Cyberspace...
The word "etiquette" means "the forms required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be required in social or official life." Etymologically, it comes from the French word for "ticket." If you know the etiquette for a particular group or society, you have a ticket for entry into it.
To get along in any given society, we're told, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." But what do you do when Rome is both invisible and divided into dozens of different ethnic neighborhoods, each with its own customs? This Rome, of course, is cyberspace -- the mass consensual hallucination in which humans all over the planet meet, converse, and exchange information.
You're in cyberspace when you log into TotallyGuitars , or when you post an article to the Forums/Groups/Walls even when you PM someone.

Cyberspace contains many different cultures, which some writers have called "virtual communities." Each of these communities has its own rules and customs. But many rules apply throughout almost all of cyberspace. And the purpose of this thread is to teach you those rules -- to give you a "ticket" to the culture of cyberspace. "Netiquette" is the etiquette of cyberspace.[sup]1[/sup]
