At a recent concert, I noticed two guys that had brought sound recording equipment. I don't know much about that kind of hardware, can only describe it as a tripod with a pole about 6 foot high, and at the top were 3, maybe 4 very sleek microphones (about 3/4 inch diameter cylinders) pointed at various angles.
They had some compact control boxes on the floor between the tripod's feet.

I took for granted this was an official recording, and chatted a bit with them. Turns out they were totally on their own, and that this is a passion of theirs.
They do recordings like this at concerts by bands who agree to these types of recordings in order to gain more widespread recognition.
Then they upload the result to a site dedicated to bittorrent downloads of audio recordings of concerts of this type, that is, done with the permission of the performers.

An important aspect of this approach is that the recordings are of LOSSLESS audio quality (not sampled, as in mp3 format).

I just had a quick look at the downloading site, looks interesting, thought I'd share.

P.S:
The concert I mentioned was by the band "The Low Anthem", 2 days ago (march 3rd 2011).
The recording is now available on the etree.org site: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=542975
