Think the Russians are constantly whacked out on vodka? Wonder why Aussies spend so much time in the bathroom? Think there's any truth to the myth of the drunk Irishman?

Those are the stereotypes -- unfortunately, there's some truth to them according to Newsweek magazine. What follows is a list of the 20 countries whose per-person alcohol consumption is the highest, along with the average amount of alcohol each person in that country drinks. Note that the amounts are listed in the quaint American Imperial measurement system of gallons -- a gallon equaling approximately 3-3/4 liters for those of you in the metric system.

C'mon Africa and Asia! You can do better than that.

Here's an interesting tidbit about alcohol production: The U.S. produces 13 percent of the world's beer. Only China at 23 percent produces more.

In Russia Vodka is 12-14% alcohol content, in OZ and Ireland the Beer starts at 5-6.5 and can be 8% in the US the average is

I was very surprised to see those cold-weather states leading the list of beer-consuming states. Hard liquor I could understand, but beer?

Only 5 of the 50 states legislate what's called 3-point-2 beer (3.2 percent alcohol). The rest of the states allow more than double the alcohol.

Thanks for the link Dermot, the map showing the favourite alcohol per land was interesting and spot on for us, France and Italy (wine). Very surprised to see Nigeria in there as a wine drinker! In the village here, the guy next door to the farm next door to me makes wine... had some on Monday, very fine too. Surprised to see the Czechs are the biggest drinkers... but there again their beer is legendary. Somehow it seems that the wine drinkers have less of a problem with alcohol and violence as the beer drinkers... can't see the jobos at a soccer match sipping a fine Cabernet Sauvignon before a fight!
