Today in Music History: Frank Sinatra Starts A Rock Label

13th Feb

1950 - Peter Gabriel, frontman of Genesis prior to establishing himself as a prolific solo artist, turns 62 today.
1972 - Led Zeppelin had to cancel a concert in Singapore after authorities would not let the group off the plane because of their long hair.
1981 - Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of Moon became the longest-running rock record on the Billboard album chart, concluding its 402nd week.

History Highlight:
Today back in 1961, Frank Sinatra unveiled his own record label, Reprise. Sinatra didn't think too highly of that rock and roll music that all the kids are listening to these days, but the label would release recordings by The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix and The Kinks. Reprise is now owned by Warner Brothers and is home to Devendra Banhart, Oasis and Green Day.

Today In Music History: First B-52's Concert

1970 - A headline in Billboard read, "R.I.A.A. Mounting Total War Against Tape Pirating of Prerecorded Music."
1972 - John Lennon and Yoko Ono began a week-long stint as co-hosts on the midday variety TV show The Mike Douglas Show. Giving the show it's highest ratings ever and interviewing the likes of Ralph Nader, and Chuck Berry among others.
1981 - Billy Idol left Generation X to pursue a solo career.

History Highlight:

Today back in 1977, The B-52′s performed their first concert together in Athens, GA. Rooted in New Wave and 1960s rock and roll, the group later covered many genres ranging from post-punk to pop rock. Gaining notoriety for their retro look and distinctive call and response style vocals; the band still rocks out on stage with hits like "Rock Lobster" and "Love Shack".

Today In Music History: The Beatles Meditate

15th Feb

1944 - Mick Avory, the longtime drummer of the Kinks, was born. Happy 68th Birthday.
1977 - Sid Vicious replaced Glen Matlock on bass with the Sex Pistols.
1964 - A headline in Billboard Magazine read, "U.S. Rocks & Reels From Beatles Invasion. The Beatles Begin New British Artist Push." The story went on to note that "Great Britain hasn't been as influential in American affairs since 1775." Also, Billboard, for the first time in its history, listed one act, the Beatles, as having five songs in the Hot 100. In addition, the #1 album on this day was Meet the Beatles, the Fab Four's first American triumph in that realm.

History Highlight:

Keeping up with the Beatles news for the day. Back in 1968, George and Patti Harrison and John and Cynthia Lennon arrived in India to study meditation techniques with the Maharishi. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr joined them a few days later.

Today In Music History: Aretha Franklin Day

16th Feb

1935 - Happy Birthday to the late Sonny Bono (born Salvatore Bono), born today in 1935.
1971 - A biker named Alan David Pasaro sued The Rolling Stones. He was the Hell's Angel who was tried and later acquitted in the stabbing death of Meredith Hunter at the Altamont Speedway concert in 1969. Pasaro alleged invasion of privacy because the Maysles brothers' film of the event, Gimme Shelter, showed the actual stabbing.
1974 - Bob Dylan had his first U.S. #1 album with Planet Waves. It began a four-week run at the top on this day. The album featured "On A Night Like This" and "Forever Young."
1990 - Ike Turner was sentenced to four years in prison on cocaine possession charges.
1993 - Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Ian McLagan, Kenney Jones and Bill Wyman (filling in for an ailing Ronnie Lane) participated in a Faces reunion at the Brit Awards in London. They played "Stay With Me" and "Sweet Little Rock & Roller."

History Highlight:

Today in 1968 the city of Detroit, MI, named today Aretha Franklin day. The Queen of Soul spent her childhood calling Detroit home learning to sing by joining the gospel choir at her father's church. Between 1967 and 1982 she had 10 No.1 R&B albums--more than any other female artist.

Today In Music History: Billie Joe is 40


Today 17th February

1960 - Elvis earned his first Gold album for 1956's Elvis, which featured "Rip It Up," "Old Shep," "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again" and "Ready Teddy."

1972 - Pink Floyd premiered Dark Side Of The Moon during a four-night stand at London's Rainbow Theater a full year before the epic album was released.

1988 - After a 12-year-old Florida boy sets his legs on fire and suffers burns over 10 percent of his body, Motley Crue warn their fans not to try anything they see in their "Live Wire" video. The boy was emulating one of the stunts done by the band in the clip.

2004 - Former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic pulls out of the race for lieutenant governor of Washington. "I found out firsthand that it's really considered bad form to run against an incumbent of your own party," he said.

Birthday Highlight:
Singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day is 40 today.

Today In Music History 21st Feb: Celebrating Nina Simone

Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) is 63.

Today in:

1964 - The Rolling Stones' third single, "Not Fade Away," a remake of the old Buddy Holly tune, was released in the U.K. on Decca Records. It struck pay dirt, becoming the group's first British Top 10 single.
1966 - The Beatles issued the single "Nowhere Man" b/w "What Goes On."
1970 - Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water album hit the Top 20. It would be the duo's last full-fledged studio album together.

Birthday Highlight:

Nina Simone, an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist, was born on this day in 1933. Simone's style arose from a fusion of gospel and pop songs with classical music, and sung in an unmistakable, smoky low tenor voice.
She died in April of 2003. Here playing her version of the jazz standard "My Baby Just Cares For Me," which became one of her signature tunes.

Today In Music History: Whole Lotta Shaking Going On

Today 22 Feb

1963 - The Beatles put together their Northern Music Publishing Company. Many years later Michael Jackson outbid Paul McCartney for the rights to the songs.

1969 - T. Rex departed on a tour of England with a concert in Manchester. The opening act was David Bowie, though he did not perform or sing any music; his act consisted of miming the story of a young Tibetan Buddhist monk.

1992 - Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love.

2001 - The Sunday Mirror lists the Beatles as the biggest money-earners of 2000. Although they no longer exist, the band pulled in a tidy $50 million.

History Highlight:

Today in at a small club in Blytheville, Arkansas, Jerry Lee Lewis pumped out "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." Although Lewis did not write the song, it had been a favorite of his since he had first heard it a year previously. On this occasion, for the first time, Lewis ad-libbed his own bawdy lyrics to replace the ones he had forgotten.

Today In Music History: Queen's Tribute to Elvis

Today 23rd Feb


1978 - Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious, trying to get a solo career started in New York, is arrested with his girlfriend Nancy Spungen on charges of drug possession.

1985 - The Honeydrippers, a retro group featuring Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, were all over the radio.

1995 - Original Temptations singer Melvin Franklin died of a brain seizure.

2006 - Twenty people are injured when ticketless fans try to gatecrash a Rolling Stones concert in Buenos Aires. Police use rubber bullets and tear gas to control the unruly crowd.

History Highlight:

Today in 1980, No. 1 on the pop charts was Queen's tribute to Elvis Presley, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Freddie Mercury wrote it while taking a bath. Mercury played rhythm guitar while performing the song live, which was the first time he played guitar in concert ("I can't play the guitar for nuts", he said).

What a fabulous video of JLL... saw him live in Vegas an it was an experience but much more pat than that.
Not sure I'd want all those guys standing around the piano touching me though!

Today In Music History: Pearl is Awarded a Gold Record


Today 24th Feb

1956 - Police in Cleveland invoked a 1931 ordinance prohibiting people under the age of 18 from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult. Cleveland, apparently, did not rock back at the time.

1965 - The Beatles began work on their second movie, Help!.

1969 - Before breaking up, the Jimi Hendrix Experience performed its last British concert at Royal Albert Hall in London.

1979 - The Police released the single, "Roxanne".

1981 - The Double Fantasy album won John Lennon a posthumous Grammy for Best Album.

1987 - Graceland won Paul Simon a Grammy for Album Of The Year, while Steve Winwood's "Higher Love" won in the Record Of The Year category. Bruce Hornsby was voted Best New Artist.

1992 - The U.S. Postal Service unveiled two versions of its proposed Elvis stamp; fans were encouraged to vote for their favorite. Ultimately, the younger Elvis version prevailed and the stamp was issued on January 8, 1993.

1998 - Elton John became Sir Elton John (Reginald Dwight), knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.

History Highlight:
Today in 1971, Janis Joplin's posthumous release, Pearl, was awarded a Gold record. The album hit stores that January, having been completed in October of the previous year. Joplin died during the recording sessions of a drug overdose - she was at the height of her career, by this time having earned the title "The Queen Of Rock n' Roll." We played the final track on Pearl, "Get It While You Can."
