Today in Music History 27th Feb : James Brown is Free

Birthdays:

Keyboardist Paul Humphreys of Orchestral Maneuvers In the Dark is 52.
Drummer Jared Champion of Cage The Elephant is 29.


Today In:

1956 - Specialty Records releases Little Richard's "Slippin' and Slidin'." The song becomes the pianist's first R&B No. 1, while its flip side, "Long Tall Sally," becomes his first top 10 pop hit.

1970 - Members of the Jefferson Airplane were fined $1,000 for using profane language during a concert in Oklahoma City.

1977 - Not a good day for Keith Richards. While sleeping at Toronto's Harbour Castle Hotel, he's awakened by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who search the suite. They find 22 grams of heroin, 5 grams of cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. The Rolling Stones guitarist is arrested and charged with possessing cocaine and heroin with intent to traffic. He's released on $25,000 bail and trial is set for October.

1990 - Milli Vanilli's Rob Pilatus shares his interesting perspective on life with Time magazine: "Musically, we're more talented than any Bob Dylan or Paul McCartney. Mick Jagger can't produce a sound. I'm the new Elvis."


History Highlight:

Today in 1991, James Brown is released from South Carolina's Lower Savannah Work Center on parole after serving time for a high-speed car chase through two states. Upon his release, Brown inevitably says "I feel good."

Today In history:

1968 - Yoko Ono records "AOS" at London's Royal Albert Hall, with John Lennon on guitar. The track later appears on Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, her companion to Lennon's album of the same name.

1980 - Buddy Holly's glasses and the Big Bopper's wrist watch are discovered in the Mason City, Iowa, sheriff's office. They had been recovered from the wreckage of the artists' plane after it crashed in 1959 and been filed away ever since.


History Highlight:

Today in 1996, producer/songwriter Wes Farrell dies in Fisher Island, Fla. Farrell wrote songs for the Everly Brothers and Lou Christie, and The Beatles, Van Morrison, Jay & the Americans, and the Yardbirds also covered his songs. Farrell also
worked closely with the Partridge Family, writing or co-writing over 30 songs for the fake musical family, including the TV show's theme, "C'mon Get Happy." Farrell's biggest chart hit, however, was the 1965 US #1 single "Hang on Sloopy," performed by The McCoys; the song itself is one of the most performed songs in the history of popular music, according to the RIAA. "Hang on Sloopy" also became the Official Rock Song of the U.S. state of Ohio, and the rock song for Ohio State University. The song is so popular in Columbus, Ohio and on the Ohio State University campus that the song is played at every sports homes game and graduation; the official website of the athletics department is HangOnSloopy.com.

Today in Music History 1st March: Johnny And June Are Married

Birthdays:

Roger Daltrey of The Who is 68.

Today In:

1969 - Doors lead singer Jim Morrison was charged with several offenses after allegedly exposing himself on stage during a concert in Miami. He was found guilty of exposure and profanity charges in 1970. His sentence was on appeal when he died in 1971. Florida's Clemency Board pardoned Morrison in December 2010.

1980 - Patty Smith married former MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith in Detroit.

1991 - The Oliver Stone movie The Doors opened in the US, with Val Kilmer portraying singer Jim Morrison.

1995 - Drummer Bill Berry of R.E.M. walked off stage during a concert in Switzerland after suffering a brain aneurysm.

History Highlight:

Today in 1968, Johnny Cash and June Carter were married in Franklin, Kentucky. The two had met several years previous and had remained close friends while married to different spouses; Cash's claim that June Carter was "the woman who saved my life" became a well-known refrain during his life (Carter had helped him battle drug dependancy and depression). Cash proposed to Carter during a live performance at the London Ice House in London, Ontario. We played the song that became their trademark duet, "Jackson

Today in Music History 2nd Mar: Lou Reed Is 70

Birthdays:

Karen Carpenter would have been 62 today.
Jon Bon Jovi is 50.
Singer Chris Martin of Coldplay is 35.

Today In:

1964 - The Beatles began work in London on the film A Hard Day's Night.

1974 - Stevie Wonder took home five Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for Innervisions.

1988 - Paul Simon won record of the year for Graceland, the first time a winning record did not hit the top 40. U2's The Joshua Tree won album of the year. Little Richard got a standing ovation for announcing himself as winner for best new artist, and complaining the Grammys never gave him anything.

1999 - Bob Dylan was the first musician to play at the House Of Blues at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. For the encore, Dylan was joined by Bono on "Knockin' On Heaven's Door."

1999 - Dusty Springfield died of cancer at the age of 59.

2006 - Singer Gary Glitter was convicted of obscene acts with two young Vietnamese girls. He was sentenced to prison.

Birthday Highlight:

Lou Reed is 70 today. From his days as leader of the seminal group the Velvet Underground to his long and influential solo career, Reed has been one of rock's most revered and respected artists (last year's weird collaboration with Metallica nonwithstanding). Happy 70th birthday to a rock n' roll survivor.

Today in Music History 5th Mar: Honoring Patsy Cline

Birthdays:

Singer Eddy Grant is 63.
Guitarist John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is 41.


Today in:

1960 - Elvis Presley officially left the Army at Fort Dix, N.J., having attained the rank of buck sergeant.
1982 - Manic comic/actor and Blues Brother John Belushi overdosed at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Los Angeles. He was only 33.
1994 - Grace Slick aimed a shotgun at deputies after they showed up at her Marin County, CA home to settle a domestic dispute. The following June, she was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and mandatory attendance at a long series of Alcoholic's Anonymous meetings.
2002 - "The Osbournes" premiered on MTV.

History Highlight:

Not much of a highlight, but a sad anniversary: today in 1963, Patsy Cline perished in a small plane crash near Camden, Tennessee. To honor the country music icon, we played "Sweet Dreams (Of You).

Today in Music History 7th Mar : Bowie's "Young Americans" Is Released

Birthdays:

Townes Van Zandt was born today in 1944, he would have ben 68 today.
Ernie Isley, of The Isley Brothers fame, is 60 today.

Today in:

1970 - Simon & Garfunkel's last album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, went to #1 on the U.S. album chart, where it would remain for 10 weeks.

1975 - In London, the audience at the Hammersmith Odeon learns about Chuck Berry's unusual concert practices when he walks off stage after 58 minutes. Berry defends himself by saying he was contracted to play only 45. And besides, "they wouldn't turn the house lights on. I always have them on for my last number."

1987 - The first rap act to have a #1 album in the U.S. turned out to be The Beastie Boys with their License To Ill disc.

1994 - The U.S. Supreme Cout rules the the 2 Live Crew's parody of "Oh Pretty Woman" does not break federal copyright laws.


History Highlight:

Today in 1975, David Bowie's "Young Americans" was released. He later described it as "plastic soul." The album's #1 single, "Fame," vaulted Bowie to a new level of popularity - it was co-written by John Lennon, featuring a fleeting vocal appearance by Lennon as well.

Today in Music History 8th Mar: Happy 65th Mickey Dolenz

Birthdays:

Gareth "Gaz" Coombes, vocalist and guitarist for the band Supergrass, is 34.


Today In:

1962 - The Beatles appeared on television for the first time, performing Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby" on the BBC program "Teenager's Turn."

1965 - David Bowie made his TV debut, appearing with the band The Mannish Boys on a British TV program called "Gadzooks! It's All Happenin'." They played their new single, "I Pity The Fool."

1968 - Bill Graham, owner of the fabled San Francisco rock ballroom The Fillmore, opened The Fillmore East in an abandoned movie theater on Second Avenue and Sixth Street in New York City. The opening night show presented Albert King, Tim Buckley and Big Brother & The Holding Company.

1973 - Grateful Dead keyboardist, singer and founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan died of a stomach hemorrhage, a result of advanced alcoholism, in the Central California town of Madera. He was just 27.

1973 - Paul McCartney pleaded guilty to having grown marijuana on his Scottish farm. He was fined the British equivalent of $240. The singer explained that a fan gave him the seeds, and he didn't know what kind of plants would blossom from them. Paul McCartney said this. Did he also not inhale?

2004 - The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office charged troubled ex-Hole leader Courtney Love with disorderly conduct. The charge is in connection with her 2003 arrest for drugs after she allegedly tried to break into her boyfriend's apartment.


Birthday Highlight:

Micky Dolenz ,wacky drummer and singer for The Monkees, is 65 today. With the recent death of Monkee Davy Jones, DJs looking to pay tribute to the band were reminded of how the great majority of Monkees tunes were actually sung by Mickey; from the giant hits "Last Train To Clarksville" and "I'm A Believer" to other popular singles like "Mary Mary" and "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone." Mickey was also, arguably, the biggest clown in the made-for-TV band, driving a great deal of the show's manic humor. We played "Pleasant Valley Sunday."

Today in Music History 9th Mar: Chrissie Hynde Protests At The Gap

Today in:

1969 - The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour was canceled by CBS-TV after the pair refused to censor comments made by Joan Baez about her husband, David Harris. Harris was bound for jail for objecting to the draft on moral convictions.

1974 - Bad Company performed its first concert in England. The band was made up of former members of Free, King Crimson and Mott the Hoople.

1975 - Elvis Presley went into RCA's Hollywood studios for what would be his final recording session.

1987 - Carole King was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York City.

1997 - The Notorious B.I.G. was shot to death while sitting in his car after a music industry party. He was 24.

2004 - Jack White, of the White Stripes, pleas guilty to simple assault and battery and was sentenced to probation and anger management therapy. White beat up the lead singer of the Von Bondies at Detroit's Magic Stick club in December 2003.


History Highlight:

Today in 2000, PETA member and front-woman of the Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde jumped into the window display of a Gap in New York to protest the retailer's alleged use of cow leather from India, where cows are held as sacred animals. She and three others are arrested and charged with criminal mischief. It seems appropriate this morning to play her song whose title is a play on Dylan's "Boots Of Spanish Leather": The Pretenders' "Boots Of Chinese Plastic."

Born Today:

Sly Stone is 68 today.
Beach Boy Mike Love is 68 as well.
Daniel "Dee" Snider, better known as the heavily made up frontman of Twisted Sister, is 57 today.

Today In:

1980 - The Clash's feature film Rude Boy, opened at the Prince Charles Cinema in London. The band members later said they were unhappy with the film, perhaps because the only song they seemed to know how to play was "White Riot."

1990 - Some 13.7 million households signed up to see a pay-per-view special by the New Kids on the Block, breaking PPV records.

2004 - Prince, George Harrison, Bob Seger, Traffic, Jackson Browne, The Dells and ZZ Top are all inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

2005 - Former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown is arrested in San Francisco after an onstage rumble with a fan.


Today in Music History 14th Mar: Loretta Lynn is 78

Born Today:

Quincy Jones, born Quincy Delight Jr., turns 79 today.

Today In:

1981 - Roxy Music had their only U.K. #1 single, a version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy."

1992 - Farm Aid Five in Irving, Texas, attracts a crowd of 40,000 to watch performances by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Paul Simon, and John Mellencamp.

2003 - Ozzy Osbourne holds a farewell party for bassist Robert Trujillo, who leaves his band for Metallica. At the shindig, wife Sharon Osbourne collapses from heat exhaustion and is rushed ot the hospital.

2006 - The Cars announce they are reforming, but without gangly/charismatic frountman, Ric Ocasek. Singing duties will instead be handled by Todd "Can We Be Friends" Rundgren.


Birthday Highlight:

Loretta Lynn is 78 today. To this day she continues to tour and record, and she was introduced to a new, wider audience a few years back with the release of "Van Lear Rose," her album produced by Jack White. We played a classic Loretta Lynn tune today, "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Take My Man).



Today in Music History 13th Mar: Life Imitates Art For Tammy Wynette


Today In:

1965 - Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds over their new "pop" direction.

1996 - A crowd in Buenos Aires rioted after it was revealed that the Ramones tickets they'd waited all night to buy had already been sold.

2003 - The surviving members of the MC5 performed a reunion show at London's 100 club, sponsored by clothing giant Levi's. Wayne Kramer defended the former radical rocker's corporate sell-out by noting, "If you don't fit into the mega hit formula of MTV you must find alternative ways to get to your audience."

2006 - Blondie, The Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Miles Davis were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Blondie's performance was marred when several old members of the band tried to bum-rush the stage.

2006 - Isaac Hayes asked to be released from his contract with South Park, blaming the profane cartoon's "growing insensitivity towards (his) personal spiritual beliefs."


History Highlight:

Today in 1975, Tammy Wynette and husband George Jones finally got that D.I.V.O.R.C.E Tammy had been singing about.



Today In Music History 12th Mar: China Censors The Rolling Stones

Graham Coxon, guitarist for Blur, is 43 .


Today In:

1955 - In New York City, legendary jazz saxophonist, junkie and genius Charlie "Bird" Parker, only 34, died of heart failure. Parker, along with Dizzy Gillespie and a few others, had more or less invented the then-radical form of "bebop" jazz music in the mid-'40s. He remains a tremendous influence.

1958 - In Philadelphia, singer Billie Holiday was given a year's probation after pleading guilty to a 1956 charge of narcotics possession.

1971 - John Lennon released his solo single "Power to the People," having recorded it a mere four days before.

1974 - John Lennon, during his famous "lost weekend," was involved in a punch-up with a photographer outside the Troubadour club in Los Angeles. Lennon and Harry Nilsson had been razzing comedian Tommy Smothers and were forcibly ejected from the club. This was the infamous occasion where Lennon wore a tampon scotch-taped to his head.

2003 - Ryan Adams ended his war of words with the White Stripes by declaring their new album Elephant, "may be the best rock 'n' roll record ever made."

2003 - Elvis Costello filled in as host on The Late Show when David Letterman fell ill.


History Highlight:

Today in 2003, the Chinese government forbid the Rolling Stones from playing the songs "Brown Sugar," "Honkey Tonk Women," "Beast of Burden," and "Let's Spend The Night Together" during their tour. At a press conference, Mick Jagger claimed that this was "no big deal," saying he'd expected some censorship from the Chinese authorities. "But I'm pleased that the ministry of culture is protecting the morals of the expat bankers and their girlfriends," he added, referring to stories in the Shanghai newspapers saying that most tickets to the concert had been sold to foreigners. With prices between US $40 and $400, tickets cost more than the monthly wage of many Chinese. On top of that, the Stones are relatively unknown among the Chinese.

Today In Music History: Mick Jones Reprises A Clash Hit

Born Today:

Heart's Nancy Wilson was born today in 1954. She turns 58 today.

Today In:

1970 - The Beatles released Let It Be.

1971 - Bridge Over Troubled Water and it's title track by Simon and Garfunkel win Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year at the Grammys.

1972 - John and Yoko were served with deportation papers after someone heard one of Yoko's solo records. Kidding! Lennon got the orders stemming from a conviction of possession of cannabis four years earlier.

2005 - Atmospheric '80s poppers The Cocteau Twins were forced to scrap their much-touted reunion gig at the Coachella Festival when singer Elizabeth Faser pulled out claiming "personal reasons."


History Highlight:

Today in 2004, Mick Jones of the Clash joined the Libertines onstage at a Love Music Hate Racism gig in London. The guitarist performs the Clash hit, "Should I Stay or Should I Go," with the band.
