That wonderfully gritty voice from The Band, who gave life to songs like "The Weight" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," died today. Amazing how often these things seem to happen in groups of three.

I wasn't all that familiar with the Band until I watched the "Last Waltz" video. Levon Helm came across as one hell of a nice guy in that film, and by all accounts he was a fine drummer who was described to me as "no frills" which in this case was intended as a compliment. A sad loss.
