Many songs(thousands +) are played with the same chord progression(sequence?) but what made them so diffrent from each-other?

Can we talk a bit a bout this,,,give your view (please,thx)

If I understand your question Willem. I would say rhythm. The notes played and not played make all the difference. On guitar it is the difference in the strum pattern, style of picking/strumming, muted or not muted, etc. Also the addition of augmented, diminished, 7ths, 9ths, etc.....

That's all outside of the melody as well. Which dramatically changes the song regardless of the same chord progression. Make sense?

My thoughts as well....

Changes in strum patterns, bass runs, hammer-ons, pull-offs, etc. Maybe even a borrowed chord once in a while just to keep things interesting. Maybe the number of measures each chord is played. Also, changing the time signature. Maybe a 3/4 or 6/8, instead of 4/4....

What makes a song a song?

I'd say:
(1st) melody - including harmonies and backing vocals,
(2nd) chord progression
(3rd) rhythm/tempo,
(4th) instrumentation/arrangement/production
(5th) lyrics (they are the last thing I listen for)

I'm guessing others will change the order of importance.

Is there anything else I'm missing?

Maybe other tunings, other than e-a-d-g-b-e.. ?

You don't actually think that I meant it is that simple, now do you Willem?

I mean, you can write books about it, that's how many elements are involved. Music is more than a chord progression, all those songs show that.

But in the end, it ís just one simple chord progression..... :laugh:

Now what are your own thoughts?
