Hi Brad,

Don’t worry about your response time - if we were in the same room this would have taken about 30 minutes. Glad I was able to better explain the chart – first time I’ve done so in this format.

I think you’ve got the chart figured out.

Now to the last function of the chart with transposing and capo’s.

Let’s go back to the chords E A B7sus F#m7 with a song in the key of E.

Transpose the chords to a key that you’re familiar with all the chords – then determine where to place the capo to accompany other musicians /vocalist in the original key of E.

Hint: Choose a key that is above “E” on the chart so that you can count down for the capo. There are several keys that will work (more than one answer).

I use the chart weekly for this purpose. I play guitar with a friend who cannot play bar chords. We often change keys to accommodate his playing ability. We also change the chords then capo one guitar for variety – it sounds boring if two guitars are both playing the same open chords.

Regarding “Just Breathe”. I followed Neil’s fingering exactly. His tab isn’t clear on the chords and lyrics. That is probably where I’m different.

I use the freeware software “Audacity” extensively on all my projects. For “Just Breathe” I isolated difficult passages and practiced them repeatedly. Another function of Audacity is to slow a song without changing pitch.

Practiced along with Perl Jam’s version reduced 25% in speed (tempo) until I was comfortable. Ended up singing it at a reduced tempo of 15%.

I’ve attached two links of Just Breathe – one 25% slower – the other 15%.

OKay this was a toughy

transposing from key E , E A B7 Fm7

D G A7 Dm7 i then counted down two to the original E key so I assume you would place the capo on the 2nd fret ????

Thank you for those links that is fantastic and what I needed. Although i cant quite keep up with the 25% I know where i am in the song its just the fingers arent fast enough yet so if i miss i go to next chord and try again, getting there, at least it pushes you.

Really appreciate that.

After watching your fingering again and again  it does follow the chart, I think the only difference i saw which i am now doing as it is much easier is when you go from the chorus on the F to the bridge starting on the G, I was trying to do a normal G and land pinky on the high D string. Instead to me it looks like you use the same G shape as in the intro and verses. Which I found a much easier transition.

You’re correct; the capo is placed at the 2nd fret when playing chords in the key of ‘D’ wishing to accompany other musicians in the key of ‘E’.

I had fun answering your question on the theory behind a capo, how and when to use one.

With Audacity any tempo change can be created. I created another MP3 at 40% slower. You should download and play around with Audacity.
