Hi
I've posted this in the ask Neil section but I'm not sure why it's titled as this because Neil never seems to reply.
Anyway my question is I can't seem to find anything relating to the CAGED system in the tutorials.
My guess is that Neil may not agree with teaching this method and if not what should be the suggested alternative to establish the basic theory relating to CAGED.
Cheers

Sorry if it seems like I 'never reply' but a quick look over the last 10 posts or so shows that the answers were given, if not by me, then by someone who knew the answer.
As far as the system called CAGED, what exactly are you asking about it? I find it mostly a convenient label for a small part of the big picture. Let me know what aspect of it you are wondering about.

Neil,
I don't understand your response to the caged system as being a convenient label for a small part of a bigger picture.....would you mind elaborating on this....thanks always for all you do...........you are truly an inspiration to us........Ken

Ken,
Thanks for the kind words and I am happy to elaborate a bit, and then pose a question for everyone.
When a student asks about any 'system', the first thing I ask them is what they know about it, or understand so far. Then I start filling in the blanks that made them bring it up. Most people have very different ideas about, and applications for the connections one can find between those 5 letters, or notes of our musical universe. The can be names for the 5 pentatonic patterns, barre chord families, the open major chords easily played on the guitar, etc.
I worry that students try to conveniently drop things into buckets of categories and then think they get the bigger picture when there are still missing connections and concepts. So let' me offer this question, and would love many opinions and answers-
What do you know about the CAGED System and how have you applied it to your musicianship?
This could become an entire treatise on the subject over a bit of time.

Yes we do,So that makes us students.LOL.Got me scratching my head on the 5 note comment.I get it with the 5 pentatonic patterns.(I think??)But barr chords and major chords or 7???A friend of mine has been working on the cage system and try to show me what he thinks. And for me It reminds me of a long gated way of playing scales.I think of the caged system as playing the scales in the box system and moving from one box to the next???So if you take and A scale and play it in the fifth position, with the root on the e string at fifth feat. That's one box(covering two octaves)And then start the same A scale at first position with the open A string. This would be another box and so on up or down the neck of the guitar would be other Box's???The cage system seem to me to be connecting those box's???My friend has a heck of a time understanding it.Even though I'm sure I'm not right,That's the bucket I drop it in,Till someone explain it better to me.Ken,

I'm not entirely sure if the caged system is something I should learn, all I know is that it's a system to find chord shapes anywhere across the fretboard.
My main source for theory is here on your site but I could not find any info on it in the theory lessons and wondered why not?
Is this system a different formula to getting to the same end result which is finding any note or chord anywhere on the fretboard.
Is it something I should look into or is it that all the information I need is already right here in all your major scales and pattern lessons.
I am starting to go through all your theory lessons and starting on the major scales using pattern 1. Is it the same thing as using or learning caged.
and while i've got your attention do you remember this.

What do I know about the CAGED system? Interesting question.
The CAGED system is the logical progression of the layout of the guitar neck in standard tuning. It allows you to connect up chords in a fairly simple way, builds arpeggios on it, and build lead scale patterns on it as well. It's got it's limitations, but it covers quite a bit of ground and puts it together in a way that is actually pretty simple. The trick to it is learning the patterns well enough to use them effectively. But then that holds true for any system.
I personally think it's a perfect starter to learning the guitar and how it's all inter-related. Once you have it down, you are then really ready to dive head first into the ocean of theory
