Just make sure that what ever you do is mechanically and structurally sound for your hand and its current level of flexibility.
What's the best position for your thumb while playing barre chords? (Poll inside)
It's funny that I had to run and get my guitar to see what I actually do. I'm in the twig snapping category, that's with my thumb positioned between the middle of the chord and the barre finger. After reading some of the responses I tried to put my thumb under the barre finger and it felt very uncomfortable, and I could not apply as much pressure.

Just my take on it in Neil's continued abscence...
Try this...just lay down the bar (barre) finger, nothing else, and getting all strings to sound clear. Harder than you think...really, try it...just the bar finger and nothing else...can you get a clear note on all six strings? You absolutely have to do this first and it is an absolute bastard. Why do this...because Em7 is a full bar except one finger only. For me, this is why thumb has to be directly behind the index bar finger, to get the pressure.
The other fingers also need pressure...but independently. IMHO that comes from finger strength...there are some really good 'hammer-on' exercises that build up your finger strength to help this. Let me know if you want the links.
