How do you go about incorporating artificial harmonics into an arrangement without sounding trite?

Good question. I understand the basics of harmonics (though I have difficulty playing them clearly), but have no idea of how they fit in musically, or if there are any "tricks" to using them. I'm really looking forward to an answer on this one.
