From Craig

Neil,

I have been working on the lead in the intro to "Wish you were here". I'm getting it down pretty good except for the double pull off in the first section. I'm having trouble getting it to sound smooth. Any tips or advice?

Love the site. Keep up the great work!

Thanks,

Craig

One of the key things in executing pull-offs is to be sure the anchored finger, or receiving finger is held down very firmly, a little harder than usual. You don't want it to move or even flinch when the pulling finger moves. The pulling finger really has to pluck the string just like your right hand would. It can't just lift off the string quickly. It is important to really master this with a single pull-off before trying a double one.

The next step, even with a single one is to practice it slowly, meaning let the upper note ring for a beat before pulling it off. When you try the double pull-off you should do the same thing- slowly, twice, and hold each one for a beat or so.

A very common mistake students make is to try this too fast and just hope it works. This is not a good practice habit at all. Be sure to check the quick tip in the Beginner's Lessons Section on Pull-Offs. showing proper hand and finger position and technique.
