Neil,

Hey, great site by the way. I've been in between instructors for a while now because I never found one that I made much progress with. I'm looking forward to learning on your site.

Anyway,

I'm working on Needle and the Damage Done. You noted in the left hand technique the need to keep a gap between your hand and the neck to let the bottom two strings ring.

It made me realize that I have a problem holding down a C chord without contorting my hand to try and squeeze the neck. I either grip the whole neck like a baseball bat and the bottom strings don't ring, or to get clearance, I bring my thumb underneath and hold it almost 90 degrees to the neck as if I'm pinching the neck between my thumb and pointer. I can't seem to hold the thumb flat under the neck and generate enough pressure.

I'm thinking lighter strings until I have the strength. Any thoughts?

Thanks
