Theory - do you really use it?

Neil, I found your explanation of the difference between scales and patterns helpful. I took music in high school (I'm now 61!). So, I understand major and minor scales and keys. But I wonder, how much do YOU really apply the theory to your playing? For guitar, I think understanding the fret board patterns and stuff like the pentatonic pattern most helpful.
