In some of the fingerstyle videos you say that when you consecutive notes on the same string, you should use different fingers to play them.
Are there any rules you use decide which fingers to use, and when. Or do you work it depending on the particular situation.
Hope I've managed to explain this well enough!
Notes on the same string with different fingers
Each of the top 3 strings (1st, 2nd, & 3rd) has a primary finger that you use most of the time. Generally that would be index (i) on the 3rd, middle (m) on the 2nd, and ring (a) on the 1st. Then each string has a secondary finger that takes most of the alternating positions. These would usually be m on 3rd, i on 1st, and m or i on 1st.
Many players only use i and m anyway and these are used anytime you have to play the 4th or 5th as well. Of course, most notes on those string are bass notes and played with the thumb (T or p)
As you guessed, this is really dependent on each particular situation and you might have to carefully work out a longer run, especially if it includes changes strings.
The biggest thing is to work out a plan of how you will finger the passage and work on it consistently. Not using the same fingers every time you play something usually leads to messing it up most of the time. It is best to remove most randomness from your playing, again, depending on the situation (and notice the most above).
