Hi, I`v been using this site for quite a while now and its really helped me in lots of technical aspects. I have a feeling, that i can learn almost anything on guitar as long as I have tabs and will to work hard. I also know that is not true, but feeling is pretty awesome, so I am going to stick with it. Just got through Clacciscal Gas. I can play it at real tempo in one peace almost every time, being bothered only by small mistakes. Of course, it do not sound like Neils version, but still pretty prod of it(thanks for that).

So this would not sound like just bragging, here comes the real question: I have absolutely no idea what am I doing on mu guitar from theoretical side. I have some knowledge about keys and how they are made but thats about it. I understand, if i whant to become a real guitar player, I cant just rely on finger memory and countless nights while learning a new song. Where do I start?

Hey, Pigors, welcome to the program. We're glad you joined us! If you wouldn't mind, please tell us a little about yourself on the Please Introduce Yourself thread. We've all done it and it's painless!!

You share a pretty common problem with the rest of us. I don't know if you caught the TG Live! an hour ago (they are all worth seeing). Neil said the very first thing we all need to learn is every note on the fretboard by heart. Then learn the scales. That should keep us busy awhile!

Neil is going to address this subject more in depth later but another thing to consider is what do you want to do with the guitar? Are going to become a professional or a campfire picker or something in between? That answer may determine how much theory you really need. If you are going to write music you may need to have different skills than if you are going to play lead guitar. You get my point.

Bill- that's a great site! I wish there was a way to print out the scales.

Hi Pigors, welcome to the site. There is a group for music theory. You should think about joining the group. We are looking for people to ask questions and get the discussion about theory going. There are many knowledgeable people who would be more than happy to lend a hand.

Actually, I`v been here for a while - before target program for sure. Just the thing that I`v spent all my time learning new songs, improving some technices and stuff like that so I was not the most active guy in forum.

I can almost surely say that I wount be professional musician but since im loving guitar so much... probably ll try to learn everything about everything ant take the high way. It always happens to me with things I love and none of them come close to guitar.

As it goes for Neils live brodcasts - they are in really bad times for me (living in Latvia) so I am watching them non-live.

All the notes by hear you say? Thats all I needed to know. Im on it

Pigors- Latvia? That's fantastic!! Do you live near Riga? Where did you learn to speak English so well? I'd love to know more about life in the Baltics after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Yea, yea, I know. But the Baltics are a fascinating part of the world. Those people have suffered for centuries and no more so than in the 20th century during WW1, then WWII and then under the Soviets. A proud people were literally beat into the ground. Thus my fascination with how they are doing now, post-communism!

This has a lot to do with guitars right? That's why I was encouraging him to introduce himself and tell us more. Sorry, very curious bear!
