Muting Strings With Your Thumb

Hi
I hope you are all having a good day.
I am a beginer when it comes to the acoustic guitar. I am just a little confused at the moment as some people appear say that you mute E and/or A with your thumb when playing some chords. Other people appear to be seletive on which strings they strum therefore not having to mute E and / A. Why are there two different methods?

Kind Regards Adrian

You should always choose to be selective. The muting is just in case you miss and hit the string.
