I've had to unlearn the habit of playing the pick with the tips of my index finger and thumb, and relearn how to use a pick the proper way. This in itself feels very strange and I'm having to adjust. But, the problem is that the nail on my right index finger is catching on the strings as I'm strumming up (down?) the strings (towards the 6th string - the lower pitched strings). I enjoy finger picking, so my finger nails are about 3-5 cm long. Even with the edge filed off it is still catching. I've tried curling my finger further under, which sort of works when I remember.

Any suggestions?

I had the same issue in terms of having to "unlearn" the bad grip on the pick and agree that it sets you back a little for a while. What I find works is to have the other fingers of the strumming hand open. Works for me anyway. I find the added benefit is it keeps the hand nice and relaxed. Just my suggestion certainly not the only solution.

Thanks Tovo. I'll try that for the other fingers, but the finger that is catching is the index finger - need it to hold the pick.

That is a Homer "D'oh" moment for me! Sorry for not reading properly. I would say just curl it up a bit more but you have tried that so I will defer to greater minds than mine.

At first reading I didn't understand how you could have a problem so I sat and held my pick for a while and checked it out lol.. Anyway I suggest you ensure you curl your index finger at the first joint first lay the pick on it at the right angle place the thumb over it to grip and then align with the strings the thumb (in my opinion) should be almost parallel to the strings pointing down the neck, the point of the pick should extend below the thumb and the index finger with the point directly facing the guitar body. If viewed from above the index finger/nail is protruding in front of the pick point you need to curl backwards or hold the pick further to the broad end thus showing more point. Remember its not a vice grip as you want the pick angle to change on both up and down strokes. SO it is tight so as not to drop it but not so tight you end up with cramps in your hand.

Thanks Chasplaya. Yes - I think concentrating on curling is the answer. Most of the time it is OK, but I was wondering whether others were experiencing it too. I think my fingers are rebelling a little as I used to hold the pick (until a couple of weeks ago) by my thumb and finger tips (no rotating involved) and I think they are trying to sneak back. OK- curl, curl curl.. Ta Michele
