Neil:
Why are there so many different scales? Which was first and what made them come up with more. Does it have to do with the tonality of the language that one learns or uses?
I read an article in the NY(new york not neil young) Times that people who grow up learning tonal languages usually tend to have perfect pitch. So it would seem to me that language would play a part in the development of the different scales that exist.
