Neil:

Being a fingerstyle player and new to the target program,I notice that on most of your songs you use a pick. On some songs you use a pick and fingers. In strumming you have shown how to use the pickless strum however am wondering how other players have addressed this issue.

I really don't want to learn to play with a pick but really want to play some of the cool target songs such as From the Beginning.

What have other fingerstyle players done?

I love the site and the target program.

Regarding your question. I would recommend that you practice using the pick. I think that the majority, if not all, of the TG members are striving towards being 'fingerstyle' guitarists, but recognise the importance of being able to do both. It will really broaden the scope of songs available to you to play.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will fill out a profile shortly and see where the lessons and songs take me with the pick. Any other thoughts from members would be appreciated.

In my humble opinion your statement about not wanting to learn with a pick is a huge mistake!! They are not mutually exclusive. Why would you want to cheat yourself out of half the fun of learning the guitar?

Most of us are trying to become better, more well rounded guitarists and not learning a major techique, like using a pick, will severerly limit your ability to play a wide variety of modern music.

Neil has some great lessons on holding and using a pick not to mention all the lessons on strumming. Give it a try, I think you will really enjoy the experience, especially if you like many of the songs on this site!

I'm not sure about the answer to that. But did Segovia ever play My My Hey Hey on a Martin D-28? If he did, he'd probably have used a pick.

It seems to me that you want someone to tell you not to bother trying to learn to play with a pick, and if that's the case then fine - no-one will give you a hard time if you fingerpick every song here. And if you want to be the next Segovia then that's probably a wise choice. But if you want to get the most from this site and learn to play these songs in the manner that most suits them, then you should bite the bullet and get yourself a pick. I don't think you'll get many people telling you otherwise.

I think you'll enjoy it here far more if you do. Have fun.

Just watch what you spend for that pick ... get an acoustic one, no electronics, cause they cost $$ to repair.
