Hi Morten! Big welcome to the program! We're glad to have you with us!

I ask everyone this but would you go over to the Please Introduce Yourself thread, start a new thread and tell us a little about yourself; where you live, how old you are, your musical tastes, what level guitarist you consider yourself, maybe your biggest musical challenge?

We're a close knit community and we love to get to know our fellow members! We've all done it and it's painless, I promise!

The first thing I would do if I was new to the site is go through all of Neil's Acoustic Genius and other lessons. It's really fantastic! It will give you a great starting point and help you understand some of the comments we make here to each other. They are usually based on Neil's lessons.

Then I would start with a few easy songs relative to what you think your ability level is. That will help establish where you belong and what level of songs you should take on. For example, try a few Level 4 songs. If they are relatively easy, try a level 6 or 7.

Neil has stated frequently that you learn best when you are stretched beyond your abilities a little bit. The more you stretch, the easier the lower level songs will seem. I'm working on Windy and Warm which was a big stretch for me. Now it's starting to sound like a real song. A few more hundreds of hours of practice and I might have it down! lol!

Then you need to develop a practice schedule that works for you. There are several threads on this forum that deal with ways to practice. But play every day, even if for a few minutes!

My one caution would be to not bite off more than you can chew. We have frequently used the analogy of us being "kids in a candy store". There is so much good stuff here that the tendency is to want to learn everything. Big mistake. Learn a handful of songs you like and then build from there, always challenging your ability. But learn the whole song, not just the opening riff.

Many of us are Intermediate players and Neil defines us as players who can play lots of songs but never one all the way through! Personally, guilty as charged! lol!

So dive right in, the water is great and let us know how we can help you achieve your guitar goals. This is a fantastic site full of warm, friendly people who are unbelieveably supportive of each other!

Good luck and cheers!! :cheer:

Hi Morten,

Welcome! As another recent member, I had much the same question and just wanted to take a moment to echo BigBear's recommendation to have a look at Neil's Acoustic Genius series. Even if this covers some familiar ground for you, Neil's videos in this series provide a great foundation, fill in gaps you may have missed previously, and get everyone on the same page with a common vocabulary.

The selection of lessons is almost overwhelming and it is difficult to resist the temptation to try to take in everything at once. What I've been doing to discipine myself is to select just a very few songs I like that seem a notch or two above and below my current level of playing and work through those first.

That said, there are so many places to jump in, almost all the songs can be learned and played at various levels, and everything I've landed on has been of such a high quality that it almost doesn't matter where you start as long as you keep at it.

Welcome Morten. It is good to have you with us. Be patient with yourself, start off slowly with just a couple of lessons. If you get stuck or if you have a question, please ask.
