Hi,
I am wondering if I should change my strings to a lighter Elixer model. I have the 0.12. Today I played a guitar that had 11's and I was able to bend the strings alot easier. I am attempting the layla first solo part and I just can't bend the strings. I heard that if I switch to and 11 that I might have to adjust the truss rod? Seems like a pain to do that.

thanks

Nemaste- I play .012's exclusively and find them the perfect blend of sound and playability. But there is no question that lighter strings are easier to bend. So if you play a lot of blues it's worth considering.

But you can't, or shouldn't, go back and forth. Your guitar should be set-up for the string gauge you play or you may get some buzzing problems or the strings may not sit properly in the nut slot.

Light gauge strings exert less pressure on your guitar neck so over time it might be necessary to adjust your truss rod if you get some movement of the neck but it's no big deal and easily done.

Good luck! :cheer:

Thanks Big Bear. Naa I don't play much blues. I am playing the acoustic version of Layla. It's difficult for me to bend even 12's. I think I will just stick with what I have. If I get another guitar I might set it up with lighter strings.

thanks again

Hey Nemaste,

if I could throw in a suggestion...

As far as bending strings goes, you could try ensuring that you're bending it with your 3rd finger, and lining up your 2nd and 1st fingers behind it on the same string - that way, you have the force of 2 or 3 fingers producing the bend. Or you could bend it with your pinky, lining up your ring finger as additional support. If you absolutely must bend it with your first finger, then the best thing for it is probably to switch to the 11's and just force yourself through it, building up your strength. If you do have to bend it with the first, you could also try planting the others in close proximity on other strings' frets and that could provide the extra support you need, especially if the following note you have to play falls on one of these nearby frets.

I'd be very surprised if changing from 12s to 11s would have any detrimental effect on your guitar. There will only be about 10lbs difference in total tension, which you'd probably replicate by playing in a dropped tuning.
