Hey, big welcome to the program! We're glad to have you with us!

First, since you are brand new here could I ask you to slide over to the Please Introduce Yourself thread, start a new thread and tell us a little about yourself? You already have a good start by what you've posted already but where do you live, what are your musical tastes, maybe where you want your guitar journey to take you, that kind of stuff. We're a very tight knit community and really enjoy getting to know each other. It's painless I promise!

As far as learning solos there is a very big trick to helping to learn them, You MUST learn the movable scales! Start with the Pentatonic scales (5-note) and learn the major ones first. There are only 5 patterns. I,II,III,V,VI (no IV). If you learn the major scales you automatically know the minor scales as well for example the C major scale is the same as the Am scale, the G major=Em and so on. Pretty cool.

Then learn to move them around the fretboard. If you can do this, and know what key you are playing in, you will be able to solo over any song! I've speant a few months casually learning this and I've almost got it down. It takes some work but it's worth doing!

Then when you solo the notes will always be in context. if you are trying to learn the opening riff to Layla for example, it won't be just notes on the fretboard it will be notes in a key. If you miss or forget what note Clapton used but stay in the scale pattern it will still sound fine. If you don't know the scales you will always hit clunkers!

Learning exact solos of your favorite songs just takes practice and more practice. But knowing the scales gives you a huge leg up on knowing what you are doing. I couldn't believe it when I started out. There are resources in the TARGET program for the Pentatonic scales and if you sill need help just post a question and you'll get tons of help!

At 61 you will fit right in on this site. Many of us are in our 50's and 60's. I'm 56 in two weeks so don't believe for a second that you can't still learn this stuff because of age!

Again welcome and let us know if we can ever help you out!

Cheers! :cheer:
