Do any of you know about this system, it is a method that explains the shapes of the cords C,A,G,E,D and how they are used all over the fret board and how the pentatonics fit with them, I am interested in learning about this system.

Neil talks and teaches somewhat around this method, if you go through the acoustic genius series and in that his pentatonic series you will see how he works it in..and I think you will find yourself better off, in fact much better off in the long run..

The CAGED system is another way of looking at the fretboard in a systematic and logical way. I've got many books and DVD's on this system and it is effective.

Basically, it assigns a chord shape for the C,A,G,E& D major chords to each of 5 scale patterns and then moves them around the fretboard. Then it demonstates the relationship as you go both up and down and across the fretboard.

So far, for me it hasn't provided an epiphany or any "Now I get it!" moments. I've done better working with the pentatonic scales. But the CAGED system is a powerful way to look at the whole fretboard and because it uses the basic 5 chord shapes may be easier for some to remember. But you still need to learn how to make minor chords or flatted 3rd blues notes for example. There still is a lot of memorization involved.

The Gold Standard for the CAGED system, IMHO, is Bill Edwards' Fretboard Logic series. He's done a very nice, thorough job on this method.

Good luck! :cheer:

In one of the TGLive sessions, Neil said he did not like the CAGED system because it is too limiting, and that his system was more 'uncaged'. I'm still waiting for him to explain that one.
