Neil, I'm a beginner and I have a question about where to go next. I have completed "Acoustic Guitar Genius - Fundamentals I: From The Beginning," and the "Beginner First Five." At the end of "Beginning Lesson #5," you say that the next lesson is "Chords and Strumming V." I could not find a lesson by that title. I know that I could probably go to a number of other lessons, but I'm a teacher and I guess I'm looking for the core structure. I mean, you should see the journal/notes that I'm keeping on each lesson part as I progress. (a bit of OCD I'm afraid, but helpful nevertheless) If I understood the organization of the lessons; had some kind of "roadmap," I would feel more comfortable progressing on this "journey" of learning the guitar. Should I complete "Guitar 101?" Is there a preferred structure, or a "roadmap" to continue after the "Beginner First Five?" Any input would be appreciated, I'm enjoying Totally Guitars a lot. I feel like I have made a lot of progress already. Thanks!

I can see why you are confused. I am not aware of anything on TG that indicates specifically for beginners which videos should be viewed and in what order. My guess is that the appropriate next step for you, having completed the First Five, would be to work your way through the Compleat Rhythm Guitarist series of videos, which is a component of the Acoustic Genius section of the website. I have yet to go through them myself, but as soon as Neil and Matt stop posting Paul Simon tutorials, I'm going to get to them.

Just a quick entry here..

We are working on a restructure that includes this..

But the idea of Target is to learn through songs then use theory to support when and if you are ready..not the other way around, which is what all the rest do..By default , picking songs you can handle you will learn specifics, techniques and theory and then as you pick harder stuff that will happen..

Now having said that..if you are a linear learner..go through 101 for now, until our new beginner course if ready..then start on acoustic genius...and strumming ...relate the lesson parts to a song you are learning..that way you can interchange lessons that are more formal and theory orientated with the songs that you love and want to learn..

If you pick 3 or 4 and maybe one of the advanced drip feed lessons, you will find yourself learning at an accelerated rate...

Why ?..because we combine the idea of anchoring learning to music , rather than music theory..without going into too much detail..your brain anchors and learns stuff quicker by i being part of a melody or a rhythm and especially with words..you effectively get hard wired quicker ....

That is a little intro to the secret "sauce" behind the lessons..

Cheers

Matt

Doug,
I'm also new here. I started back on December 09. I think you did it right by completeing the Genious series. As previously suggested, I strongly recommend the Rhytm guitarist sections aswell.
Then find a couple of songs you like and have fun. Each one has the theory and techniques explained and although tough at the begining (at least for me) you'll find yourself moving forward faster than you've imagined....

Have fun
Juan
