Just a couple of quick questions (not just for Neil) that tie in with the “How many of you read music?” thread. The first is only for those that can currently read music. . . .

Where are you currently applying your music reading skills?

And now for those who cannot currently read music, but are willing to learn. . . . .

Where are you planning to apply your music reading skills?

Thanks,

I can read (at least I think I can - I'll know better when Neil's lesson comes out!) standard notation, but not fast enough to play on the fly. I find reading standard notation useful for two things: mapping out the right hand strikes (upstroke or downstroke, etc.) of an unfamiliar song, and I find it essential to accurately create the sheet music for my growing collection of chord solos. I find good sheet music to be way more useful than a marked up chord sheet if I haven't played a song in six months or so.

I use Tabs only. I've never given any serious study to sheet music. Always thought it was for piano. But Tab, now, I'm learning it because it's essential to my learning how to fingerpick, and play lead for some songs. I find that a lot of Tab on the internet is terribly wrong.

I can read it. At the moment I use it when I'm learning something for an instrument that's not a guitar-type of instrument (e.g. Piano) or I want to learn a song that I don't have the tab for (which I currently don't do very much of). I also use it to read the information that's in the standard notation of Neil's lessons (and other sheet music) that's not in the tab itself; basically everything except which notes to play and where. I really should read music more.

I'll answer the first question, i use it for almost anything. For instance when i need to quickly figure out a song i don't know, which i often have to when teaching others particular songs. It tells me exactly which notes to play and when to play them. Either for the guitar or the piano, or for singing. And I of course use it when playing classical songs. Also when playing with others i find it very useful as well. I want to know exactly what kind of song we're dealing with, how it goes from A to Z, so that i do know what i'm talking about when going through a song with my fellow musicians.

Well i'm sure i'm forgetting stuff, but in short, i find it extremely handy, useful, beneficial and in some cases an absolute must.
