Okay, I have used acrylics for two years. Guys, it's the 21st century. It's okay to wear pink, carry a man bag (okay, call it a tactical satchel if you must--Maxpedition.com has some used by military spec ops) and yes, get your nails done. I only get the nails on my right hand done and go every week because I play so much. That said, this is really a response to the guy who said he went to a Vietnamese lady to get his nails done. You need to watch this video on YouTube! Enjoy!

Finger Picking
I have ordered a kit recently from this company seems worth a try. I have been using acrylics which sound great, but seem to come off too quickly.
I also ordered a rotary tool from Amazon as well. This is a little different as they are superglued on. I've been to a salon but the nails lasted as long as
the ones I put on by myself. My own nails break too easily.

It's a tad late in the conversation, but I used acrylics for nearly two years. I tried the ProPik Fingertone Pics a couple of years ago and couldn't make them work. But I just tried them again and Wow! I can tell my "technique" has improved over the past couple of years because I'm kissing my nail lady good-bye and going with the pics. I'm not using a thumb pic because, as Neil said, it makes the bass too loud, but the tone on my index, middle and ring fingers is now consistent and I can get more volume with less effort. I only play fingerstyle so perhaps its something that comes with lots and lots of practice, and that's what I've done. But the difference is phenomenal.
My two cents,
Cheers,
