Stuart, has Manchester finally been abolished then?!Lancashire has Liverpool and, until not so long ago, Manchester. Hertfordshire has, well,... not much.

Yep, counties or shires. Each seems to have its own accent.... it's a wonder anyone understands anyone else!
Sorry, missed this. Yes, as Chris said, these are counties. Shires are counties, not all counties are shires, eg Kent.
Chris, Manchester has indeed been abolished - from Lancashire at least. Greater Manchester has been removed from the Lancashire to form it's own metropolitan county (as has Liverpool - now Merseyside).
