Hey, big welcome to you! Glad to have another Scot amongst us, it keeps the Anglish humble (sorry Joe and Chris! lol!). I've been all over Scotland and love it! Spent some time in Northern England too, around Newcastle. Very stark, beautiful country. I remember the moors.

Anyway, you'll fit right in here with us old-timers but don't expect much respect from these young whippersnappers, they were abused children and very poorly behaved indeed!

If we can ever do anything for you just jump in and ask. You'll get more help than you can possibly use. Some of it may even be useful! lol!

Happy playin' and cheers!! :cheer:

Naz! Man you gotta get a real avatar. That generic thing is for non-posting types. Hey, I saw a good one of Fred Flintstone wearing a Pooh Bah hat. I'm sure the guy using it wouldn't mind....

...don't want to be pedantic BUT, there is no 50+, I'm actually 50- until October. It's tough enough without getting there early!!

Now, I'm off to get an avatar before I get in trouble.....

Welcome, reiver. Ignore these other guys their wives don't know they are hanging out on this site. They think they are selling illegal Viagra.

If you have any questions be sure to ask and someone will answer, there are some very knowledgeable and helpful people here. Also, be sure to check out and join any groups you find interesting, they can be a lot of fun.

Looking forward to seeing your contributions to the forum also.

Hey all!

Well, some of you already know me, but I figured I'd give a better introduction here.

My first musical experience came as a young girl, trying to learn to play the violin. I picked up what the teacher taught us, and memorized which strings to hit when, etc. However, I somehow never got around to learning how to read the music that was put in front of me. So, one day our teacher asks us to turn to a new song (The Star-Spangled Banner) and see if we can pick it out from the music. Well, I might as well have been trying to read hieroglypics. I had no idea how those dots and flags on a bunch of lines corresponded to the music everyone around me was playing. I was humiliated and angry and decided that I was done with music forever! Clearly I was not musical, so why waste my time?

Fast forward about 20 years. I start to realize that a resolution made at age 8 is not necessarily a well-thought out one. I decide to start learning to play piano, mostly teaching myself through books. Piano was fun, but not very portable, and trying to get people to sing along always felt so stodgy and like something out of Charles Dickens. So, I lost interest in piano. Then, for his 30th birthday, my husband got a guitar. He noodled around with it a bit, mostly hitting a chord then throwing up the devil horns at me, tongue sticking out a la Gene Simmons. This lasts for a couple of weeks until the novelty wears off for him. So I pick it up and discover, hey- this kind of rocks! I feel much cooler playing it than I did playing piano (and coolness is, as we all know, the most important factor when choosing an instrument to play), plus it's portable and people like to sing along with a guitar! I mostly did some learning by myself, printing out lousy TAB online and trying to figure out how the heck you play that song. Took a group class, but was mostly stagnating. Then I found

(fanfare)

TOTALLY GUITARS!

I didn't join for a few weeks because I'm a bit of a cheapskate and figured I'd get what I could for free. But I quickly realized that all the really cool stuff (as Neil would say) was on the paid membership. And, really $20/month is a steal.

Probably more than anyone wanted to know, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

You guys were so caught up with Naz that you didn't acknowledge Suzi!

Suziko, I can so relate about taking lessons and not learning to read music. I took piano when I was 10 my sister was 16, we had a piano and had a teacher come in once a week. My sister got married at 18 and I didn't care for the piano. I got a beater guitar and started playing that. I wanted an electric, made a deal w/ parents, if I took guitar lessons for 2 years I get an electric guitar. After 2 years my teacher finally figured out I was just memorizing the tune and would play it at the next lesson. I didn't know what the time signatures and all the things you mentioned. Same thing as you, he wanted me to play a song I didn't know. Whoops. Gave up lessons but kept playing with several friends who played guitar, drums, keyboards etc. Gave it up during college and work. Forward 30 some years and (drum roll) I found TG. Bought 2 guitars so far and am playing songs & plan on jumping in with a video just for the fun of it. Anyway, just really related to your story about not learning to read music after taking lessons. Nice to meet you. Glad you are with TG. Gary

Suziklo- I thought we got you but if we missed you it was unintentional and I'm sorry! A big welcome to you too. Really glad to have you with us as well. I didn't see what part of the world you live in?

I love your story about how you picked up the guitar. Seems to fit the whole notion of a guitar player doesn't it? Could almost be a good blues tune! lol!

Cheers! :cheer:
