I'm looking for a new acoustic for blues / fingerpicking that has a bit of quality built in. I had shortlisted 2 models the Taylor 214 and the Martin 000M, both with solid spruce top and laminate mahogany back and sides. Then the Gibson Songmaker CSR caught my eye, a solid wood rosewood / spruce / mahogany model built in Canada at a very reasonable price. The trouble is I can't find one in a showroom near me and the only alternative is to order online....risky!
Does anyone know anything about the Songmaker series? Would it be worth my time taking a 300 mile round trip to try one? I have heard from one of only two reviews I can find, that the neck has a very full profile, therefore it is making me nervous to order online. Can anyone let me know if the tone stacks up against the other models I mentioned?
Cheers ~ Lee

Don't be afraid to mailorder. Check out myfavoriteguitars.com out of Naples, FL. They offer most quality brands at a 40% discount. They are one of the largest Martin dealers in the world and ARE reputable (yes, the Martins are 40% off). I recently purchased a D28 Marquis and an M38 Koa...both are wonderful guitars and were factory fresh. Once you find one you like, give Jon Garon, the owner, a call...very knowledgeable and accommodating. Good luck!
