I use a Korg TM-40.
A sweet little tuner with a metronome built in.

My Ibanez acoustic has a tuner built in. For the electric, I use the tuner in the amp.. I haven't been at this long enough to do it by ear...yet..

Sabine STX 1100 here. Easy to use and has transpose ability. Not too expensive either. Only problem is it often cannot pick up the low E string when not connected by a cable.

I've noticed that tuners often can't pick up the low E easily. What often works is to pick the harmonic (on the 12th fret) of the low E when tuning.

Yeah that works, but I don't think the 12th fret harmonic is accurate enough in relation to the rest of the strings.

It's not perfect, but it seems to work well enough for me. I use an Intelli IMT-500. YMMV, of course. :)

Makes me wonder how acoustic bass players can use tuners--unless they plug in or there are tuners specific to basses.

That's a good question. I don't own a bass guitar. I wonder if it's different for an electric bass, where you could plug in an inline tuner, vs an acoustic or upright where you might use a tuner with a microphone or one that clips to the headstock or body.

Korg GA-30 works well for me. Just don't accidently put it on bass setting...it will send you twisting the string into the woods somewhere.
